Hey everyone!

So the current pause is still active for some days, but I still wanted to give a status update of what's going on. On the Horse Work™ side of life there was a launch mid-month and also the one I talked about for Corsair Cove hitting in a few days and both have been busy. It's not quite a SOMA situation where the video is just on the bleeding edge of being done, since Bioshock's story ended up being more and less of a rabbit hole (Cohen unrelated) at the same time that has required a lot of restructuring and re-editing on my end, but when the video is out you'll see why this one was such a fucking bear on the technical end, but hopefully the actual flow should still be good. It's in an odd spot since Bioshock has a lot about political systems in it, but the more I've actually dug through audio logs and things throughout the game it starts aiming to more simple takeaways, so this one has been trickier than usual to even get a firm grasp on how I unpack some things. Since I was already not gonna make it back in June, I did look over more things in the remaster as well, so it should be a more comprehensive video on the game and why you should avoid its remaster if possible, but ideally I try to avoid "this is like 10 minutes before talking about the game itself much beyond what a mess things are" and this is becoming one of those. It's not quite Ring 2 levels where I was having to dig around the registry to get things to work, but the spirit feels very much the same. The bad news is while it's close, I do think it's in a territory where it could be rushed if I tried to tackle it over this weekend (and my collaborating artist has been drowning in work as well) so depending on how crazy post-launch is it'll be the first or second week of August since that should be more than ample time.

Anyways the GOOD news is the FEED MY MECH video is something I'm happy with and basically good to go for the 7th minus some tweaks I'll throw on, so there won't be another pause and there's a video coming this week short of me getting hit by a meteor or something.. I did discover that there's no longer ANY kind of community tab, and Patreon has shifted over to a "community chat", which looks like having an internal Discord with no channels directly tied to Patreon which sounds like a nightmare to me. It's a complete reversal where now YouTube has a community tab (which I haven't activated) and Patreon seems to no longer do. So the video/discussion on the game will be on the post itself. I have seen Patreon has livestream features which I'm skeptical of, but we'll see how this goes in a thread format before considering anything like an actual live club. Frankly if I do test Patreon's livestream anything it'll be on some weird game with a bit of a heads-up about the "test" rather than putting something more substantial on there and having everything technical go wrong live for that. However, all of this does bring us to BioShock 2.

Quite a bit of that is already recorded, but while it's less unstable it's definitely still unstable. But it may make sense to back to back Bioshock and then Bioshock 2 since I've been in the Rapture brain space so long, and then afterwards pursue something like EYE Daimon Blades right after. Minerva's Den is also something very worth being its own standalone video, but likely something shorter I would save for a bit later in the year just to not blast everyone with back to back Bioshock even if you all say to go ahead with 2. So with this there will be a poll on how to approach that, and I'll let it run to the 6th. That way if the video for 1 is good to go on that day and not the week after it's just a light edit to point to the video for 2 being after.

Thanks so much! Choose wisely!

This is quite a political question and I fully understand not wanting to touch it with a 100 foot cane. But Ken Levine has had such a strange turn around in regards to Rapture and he seems to now believe that rapture and andrew ryan are the good guys because of current events. I've loved bioshock for a long time and it gives me such extreme whiplash to see.

While I can’t lie that I really want to get Amnesia Rebirth and The Bunker videos, the appeal of Bioshock 2 is too great.

It's weird because I do see rapture as the evil strawman of capitalism to a large degree but they're objectively wrong in their universe. Part of what could make the difference is a strong moral fiber thst rapture never had

Sucky_Player

Continuity be damned, I need more Pathologic videos.

FrozenFOXX

I've always thought BioShock 2 was underrated, so I'd love to see your thoughts on it

I can't believe Fatal1ty's trail mix sponsored you.

Its a realitivley common thing. I have actually seen somthing similar looking into lancer recently. Despite the fact a lot of its fans have a very political view of it. The work itself is less so, more grounded, and says less definitive statements. To ask if the union in lancer is a good or bad thing is the wrong question to ask. Its the people, the nation, and what those people decided to do in the unions name. How they implemented the unions ideology. Ideas are ideas after all. How you accomplish them can be a bloody affair.

Minerva's Den tends to be praised as the true sequel as many didn't like the main thrust of 2's story: a daughter needs a dad and she will latch onto and become what her dad is, especially if her mother proved unsavory. About the only real complaint I have is with the third major moral choice of killing the mutant scientist or letting him live. While he was sane, he wanted to die before he hurt someone. As a monster he constantly toyed with us. Mercy towards him, would simply lead to further victims.

Take all the time you need on the videos. Looking forward to your next review when it's ready.

Blessed updates, thank you Mandy. Have you considered youtube community posts, they don't need to be membership-only if you're not interested in potentially double-billing people and while I have no knowledge from the creator side of it, it's relatively visible and the algorithm is decent at actually showing up from a subscriber perspective.

Let's go the marathon route, rawdog the entire franchise in one go

That seems super weird since Ryan is blatantly showing not believing in the idea over his own ego when it gets down to the wire.

I reread the kotako article I was basing this on. I was being a bit hyperbolic but Levine's quote. “Rapture, like Israel, is a response to oppression,” said Levine. “It’s a response to a fear of future oppression. [Ryan] sees threats to his kind and his solution is a radical one. It’s an extremely radical one, but it’s not that different than starting a state in the Middle East. It’s a radical solution to a radical problem.” I think saying he believes rapture and ryan where right was pushing it. It seems to frame it "looking back If israel is a net good, so is rapture." That might be too simple of a read for a pretty nuanced article and story though.
