All transformation stories can be boiled down to one aspect of transformation or another. Yes the subject and form can vary, but when you pull back the layers you eventually come to the truth that a transformation into a sex doll and a squirrel really aren’t all that different what really makes them stand apart is which of the four aspects of transformation does the story use?

Corruption. Reduction. Entrapment, and Binding. I think each of them focuses on a different emotion that can be felt by the person being transformed., and thus, by the reader.

Corruption is being remade into a new form. As with all of these you can feel an entire spectrum of emotions. But corruption focuses on you WANTING the new form. On the arousal behind it. Corruption is arousal.

Entrapment is loosing control, to be aware but helpless as your body is puppeted/acts on its own. It wants you to be aware of the fact you are helpless and focused on the fear of not being in control.

Binding is being forced to act or dress a certain way. A uniform or a contract. Trying to blend in to not be noticed. You *could* drop the act at any time, but you don’t want to face what happens afterwards. The Embarrassment keeps you in place.

And Reduction is the last, playing upon the themes of surrendering to the utter reduction in mental state to an unthinking object. No memories of what was before. No humanity to return to. It plays on the themes of acceptance and release. An almost orgasmic experience as you slide into your new role. Unaware you were ever anything else.

Just some musings upon the underlying nature of transformations in stories.

This feels overly reductive. Other modalities: Experimentation - to try out new experiences and new ways of seeing the world. Empathy - to walk a mile in someone else's shoes... literally. Determination - whether deliberately or through hostile action, to persevere through a difficult change. (Some shrinking stories go this way - man vs environment, writ small.) Justice - transforming someone to make amends for their actions. (This is often twisted in stories that transform for the merest of slights, but it could be done for noble reasons, too.)

Great explanation. Thank you. Definitely clears things up for me
