You don’t need a reason to celebrate our feline friends as they will do whatever they please regardless of the occasion. That’s not to say they don’t appreciate the sentiment. They’re complicated creatures, after all.

I met Pumpkin outside my storage unit facility in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He’s a stray the employees there protect and feed. Apparently he was quite emaciated when he first showed up and runs at the site of humans. He quickly ducked around the corner when I pulled up.

I spoke with the site manager and asked if I could take a photo. She said “Good luck.” I was determined. I waited for awhile and saw through the window as Pumpkin slowly approached his food dish. I made sure my camera was ready and gingerly stepped outside and waited for him to finish.

He hugged the side of the wall and walked back towards the corner that led to his hiding place. Then he did something some might say was ordinary but, in the case of an abused animal like Pumpkin, was quite remarkable: He layed down and stretched out to enjoy the afternoon sun.

I quietly stepped up and kept my distance. He turned to look at me and for whatever reason (remember: a cat needs none) allowed me to snap some pics. I thought this was the best one.

Be kind to our furry friends as they make this world a bit more magical. And Happy International Cat Day! =^..^=
