I always thought that at this moment time and space within the dreamscape became distorted and then cracked. I pictured a flash of images running through Arthur's mind causing him to wake up suddenly. But the information revealed within his dream (or rather, a nightmare) was just a collection of fragments. A portent, but not a blazing warning to unsheathe Excalibur and look for danger. 

At that same moment, I visualized Merlin, most likely still awake (does he sleep?), tapped into the ether. He felt it too. To him the disturbance was a call to action -- a push to investigate further...
