Was this tossed aside in frustration over forgetting the combination to unlock it? Or was it a message -- or perhaps even a challenge? That someone would eventually crack the code and make this item useful once again...

I had a lock something like that, and forgot the combination. Realized that this was not an insurmountable problem, since I had witnesses that it WAS my bike, and nothing better to do for an hour or so. Yep, started going through ALL combinations till I hit it. Was only about halfway through "all possible ones", which was about what I expected. Made sure I had paper handy to start, so I could write it down and put it in my suitcase for my NEXT trip to that city.

Yeah, "only" took about 5000 attempts ! My fingers were QUITE tired. But I did feel kinda triumphant. I was just starting to hurt enough to consider giving up, too !
