Jolene and Katie are two characters who I considered moving on from after the comic really took off with the introduction of Roxie. Those first few strips they appeared in were definitely works-in-progress. They lived on, however! 

I didn't have friends like Jolene and Katie after I came out and I wished I did. So they sort of represent a wish-fulfillment aspect in some ways for me. But they are based on people I know and situations I've come across. 

I see shows like Euphoria in which trans girls are "one of the gang" so-to-speak and I get a little wistful. Hopefully as time goes on society becomes more accepting and trans people get to have more "normal" experiences. Like just being there for their friends when awkward reactions like the one Katie has in this storyline occur.
