When the Black comedy queens kill it, people are very stingy with words like “smart” and “clever”, even though it takes so much thought and hard work to pull off those performances. “smart” and “clever” seem to be reserved or at least used more liberally when other comedy queens perform, even if it’s an obscure mess. If people don’t laugh, it’s not because they weren’t funny but because the audience wasn’t intellectual enough, which is an excuse rarely afforded to Black queens. Suzie said what she said 🤷🏾‍♀️

thank you, this articulates really well why Suzie's comment made me so uncomfortable. many people have an idea of what a stereotypical funny black person is and will put every black comedy performance in that category, which makes them believe that the black comic is just doing an exaggerated version of themself, completely ignoring the nuances and thought that gets put into it

i just have to say bob is 100% correct eddie murphy has completely transcended all comedy spaces and there’s 0 justification (other than deflecting/jealousy) that you wouldn’t know the impression Onya did was spot on. I’m 26 years old and not black so just based on my age obviously i was exposed to him as donkey and mushu but also coming to america was like scripture in my house lol, so I don’t believe someone close to my age wouldn’t get multiple Eddie murphy references. even if you don’t know the movies his quotes/lines transcend the movies themselves!

Off topic but loved y’all’s video with Peppermint to Kendrick’s song it was so fun! I have watched his performance several times and also have been a fan for years. The new album is great. Back on topic, I just am not a fan of the girls this year other than my fellow Gemini Onya and Lexi. Suzie really disappointed me this episode. I can’t get behind a person who is acting like rupaul has already said she is America’s Next Drag Superstar and has awful implicit biases that are so unfair to a real star like Onya. Her impression was spot on, go watch the SNL50 anniversary episode and look at the sketches Eddie was in and you will know instantly that Onya did a brilliant job.
