just commenting as a nurse to give Bob some more perspective of why the nurse didn't turn up his mom's oxygen. first i want to recognize that medical racism is ABSOLUTELY a very valid thing. But if someone is saturating well a nurse SHOULD NOT increase the person's oxygen as it can result in a thing called carbon dioxide retention which is very dangerous. I do recall that Bob mentioned that his mom had COPD - in this case someone within this lung disease, we actually do not want their oxygen saturations to be high (we would aim for a goal of 88-92%). Someone with COPD's brain has a different mechanism to signal the body to breathe which is opposite from someone without COPD. Basically people with COPD have chronic high CO2 levels so they use oxygen levels to signal the brain to breathe, if someone with COPD has high oxygen levels their body basically thinks they are getting enough oxygen and stop the breathing process. This is what I assume was happening to your mom and why she felt like she couldn't breathe. What the nurse should have done is inform the doctor and have the doctor check her CO2 levels instead of ignoring you guys. Sorry you had to go through this with your mom, end stage COPD is a terrible thing.

Im a nurse. And with all respect for mama and her experience. Nurses may not increase oxygen if a patient is saturating well because it can 1000% cause more damage especially if the airway/lungs are already compromised. Its like blowing up a balloon beyond capacity. at some point it isn’t therapeutic. ♥️ however they shouldve educated instead of denying
