[NR] Oh Hey, Them Again - Chapter 779 (Patreon)
Content
The portly human just smiles when Jason tells him to not come closer. “Take him, boys!”
With that, the squat guy from the group lifts up his hands and silent casts a spell. Which makes sense when a supernatural silence falls over the camp. Now, normally this would have been quite useful for them. After all, it is kind of hard to quickly wake others if they can’t hear you shout.
Though Jason actually looks down on this tactic. While a blanket silencing effect will block a shouted warning. A well-trained adventurer will just as easily wake up to sudden complete silence. After all, even if it isn’t some magical silence, if all the wildlife goes silent there’s probably something dangerous around that you’ll want to be awake for.
Not that it matters in this case as Jason had already awakened the others. So as the unnatural silence falls over their camp and the two humans that had tried to sneak in early now charge at them, Rosha and Courtney are ready. Which is quite unfortunate for the two charging enemies.
Jason is sat, back against the crate and away from the two charging men, facing his own tent. This means that to get to him, the enemies have to pass between Rosha and Courtney’s tents. In other words, the perfect setup for an ambush, and the two don’t disappoint Jason’s expectations.
As the two men go in opposite directions around the crate, Rosha and Courtney pop out of their respective tents, already attacking.
This surprise attack ends the fight before it can even properly start. The two that charged are dead within moments, while the portly man and the stout spellcaster soon follow them. An almost inevitable outcome as the human merchant had entirely misjudged the party, thinking they were on the same break as them when actually they were one ahead.
Oh sure, the difference between their levels and stats weren’t too cataclysmic. Still, combined with the circumstances? It certainly didn’t make for a fair fight.
And with the death of the magic user, the silence spell falls, so the jacklekin can come over and ask what’s up. Not that they didn’t have a clue. As while Jason had been visibly on guard, they had actually kept watch as well. Though they hid the fact, having gotten bad vibes from the whole situation.
The tallest of the three scratches his head, “Well, that went a little further than I expected. We probably need to report this to the city.”
Courtney sighs, “Is there a Temple of Truth in the city?”
The tall jacklekin shrugs, “Well, yeah. What city worth its salt wouldn’t?”
Courtney shakes her head, “Doesn’t matter, but them being there makes the next step a lot easier. Don’t touch anything, we’re going to report what happened to them first under oath. Then have them turn that report into the guards for us.”
Rosha, “Isn’t that a little overkill?”
Courtney shakes her head, “If they were willing to attack us so close to the city? They’ve got guards on their side. We might not have been shouting about us being travellers, but even just as adventurers, they should have realized we probably weren’t staying dead. So their plan has to involve us eventually returning from wherever we died and making noise.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if at least their leader has an extra life or two kicking around. So we need a couple of church officials out here now to take our report. Because if we just try to report this to the gate guards? There’s a good chance we'll end up being accused of something by them.”
The tall jacklekin sighs, “Well now, I wouldn’t be surprised if that is more true than not. One of us should probably go and get them.”
Courtney, “Someone from both our groups should go together. Because I doubt you trust us just because we claim to want to report to the temple.
“So yeah, Rosha, you’ll be the one from us since you have Peter as a master. That should provide you a little more oomph when requesting the help of the temple.”
The tall jacklekin nods, “Fair enough. I’ll have Robby go.” And he pulls forward the jacklekin to his right that has a notch in his right ear and a scar on the back of his right hand.
Robby yawns, “Okay. Get some Truth priests? We're going to have to pay anything for this?”
Courtney shakes her head, “They’ll at least come by and take down a report. Now, if they ask us if we truly believe this was necessary and we said no? That’s a different story, but I assume we all agree at this point that we need them?”
Everyone else nods
Courtney claps her hands, “Good! Then the four of us need to sit tight and not touch or move anything, while the two of you go and get them.”
And so Rosha and Robby both grab their IDs and head over to the city, which is less than a half-hour walk away. Thankfully, there is a new shift of people and none of them realize Robby is not only returning the day after he left, but is no longer with his group, and so the two get into town just fine.
Robby isn’t 100% sure where the Temple of Truth is, so they end up wandering for a minute or two. Though it wasn’t hard to get close as the church is located near the city’s court, which was made quite big and showy.
Robby, “There it is ! Let’s get this over with.”
Rosha, “How can you tell? It looks pretty average. The last one I went to was all white and what not.”
Robby laughs, “Betting that was in one of you traveller type’s starter towns! All the temples and what not put their best foot forward in those. For a place like the Temple of Truth? They don’t need to show off. Their reputation alone is enough!”
