Until now, I've never found the time between prepping for the next pack to test new lighting setups. I always use the same 2 to 3 render settings because there is very little noise and striation lines in the BG, but the lack of variety is starting to bore me and I'm sure many of you feel the same.

So I created 10 new lighting setups! Some of these I won't be using at all, there is just too much haloing and not enough contrast, regardless of the BG color. I rotated the lighting 3 times for each setup and switched around the background between light, dark, and medium.

I also did tests of all 10 lighting settings against the same BG colors:

There is a balance to be struck between the BG and the lighting direction. You can see how bad the striation becomes when the lighting isn't suited to the background. I'll continue to test these here before I decide which to use for the main packs, but I would love feedback on preferences. Do you prefer more shadow and contrast? Or something softer?

The model used is my favorite statue, 'André Chenier’s Muse' by Denys-Pierre Puech (you can download it for yourself here)

(Preface I’m not the best at lighting and draw in a style that avoids it wherever possible) However I tend to prefer the high contrast of the bottom photos, or the midtones in the centre, the midtones is for me most ideal I think because in the softer ones I find it hard to separate the details from the Bg and from other anatomy, and the same tends to happen in reverse with the high contrast as well, the midtones leaning for the darker grey tends to be the sweet spot for me to reference. That might just be me though!

I agree! The lighting I used before wasn't well-optimized, so hopefully I can achieve more of that nice contrast between the subject and the BG (while also avoiding those ghastly striation lines 💀) Since my models are usually grey though, this is probably going to take a few tries to get right. I appreciate the feedback, as always!
