Taking a note out of James Gurney's "Imaginative Realism" and continuing to learn from my favorite art teacher, I decided to continue the quick portrait studies with, you guessed it, Sargent! It all started with 'Egyptian Woman', and then I looked up what seemed to be one of his favorite muses, Flora Priestley. He had done several paintings of her (first three, bottom left) and they were all different color temperatures: warm, cool and neutral grey. I thought that was really fascinating, and I wonder if it was intentional...

I hope to try and paint one of these a day, but we'll see. I made them all small enough that it should be easy to do so.

Also a sketch book update! So long story short, I kind of got burned out on it. Everything I have to say is just going to sound like an excuse, which I try to avoid. I just got really frustrated, and then my motivation to keep pushing through that frustration sort of died along with it. I have another sketch book that has no textured paper and is spiral bound, which I think is more suited for my particular weaknesses. I might try to fill this with a variety of studies instead of just figure drawing, and work in pen so I can't get caught up on fixing my mistakes. All I know is, I don't want to give up on keeping a sketch book just yet.

James Gurney is my favorite illustrator of all time so this post and these sketches make me super happy. I got to do an interview with him once and he is absolutely the nicest person. His work continues to inspire me every single day and it's so cool to see how he inspires your work. Also it's totally okay to be frustrated and let yourself take a break with burnt out. Be patient with yourself and forgiving. <3 Go with what feels right to you even if it's not what you had planned originally.

That is so cool! I really admire him as an artist, and both of his books along with his blog have been very useful for me over the years. He mentioned doing these cropped portrait studies from masters in 'Imaginative Realism'. He suggested doing them from multiple artists to compare the styles of each, so I will try to do that myself at some point. Thank you so much for saying that, it really helps! I guess I just feel guilty promising one thing and not delivering, but maybe I am disappointing myself more than I am anyone else.
