Practicing Traditional (Patreon)

I am in full-on study mode again and decided to buy myself a set of cheap gouache paints. Oil is just too expensive for me right now, and I never knew that gouache could be used both opaquely and as a wash. The best part is that you only need water to mix it!
I've also been getting a little braver with traditional work in general, and I try to do small studies on newsprint with graphite pencils whenever I find the time:
I really love how newsprint feels, there no texture for my pencil to catch on and I can smudge it easier. I also like graphite better than the charcoal I have, as charcoal is just a bit too messy for me.As for the gouache, I will start small with some simple studies and maybe use the limited Zorn palette to mix colors on my own (I have plans for all the amazing greens in this set though, don't you worry 👀) but I actually want to do master studies once I get comfortable enough!
I always feel silly talking about traditional work like it's this scary thing, but it is for me. I don't know why either, but even these baby steps feel like huge leaps forward. Sometimes I just want to have a physical art piece to hold in my hands, as much as I enjoy digital.
