I have tried three separate times to make a matching set of portraits of Cassidy and Erie, and every time I either get stuck on rendering, or just don't like how they look. It has been really frustrating and these aren't easy to post, but I wanted to show you my attempts anyway. I don't want to call them failed attempts because I'm trying to be nicer to myself whenever something doesn't work out.

This was the first attempt! I liked that I matched the background colors to their shirts. The biggest problem in all of these though has been drawing Erie consistently. I have no reference for her hair and I pretty much get stuck on that and end up abandoning Cass' portrait since I don't want to finish one without the other.

Same thing with the second! I like the sketch, but once I get to her hair I have no idea how to render it to match the semi-realism in her face.

And the third and most recent attempt is the one I got the furthest (and closest) on, but again her hair stumped me. Now I am wondering if I need to sculpt it or something so I know how it looks.

I think I'm just in a strange place with my own art. There is so much I want to do, maybe too much, and I end up overwhelming myself with it. I might need to step back, study, and experiment for a while. I need to learn to take my time and stop drawing so I have art to post instead of drawing for the love of it.

Do any of you have these issues too? I know I'm not alone in feeling this way, even if it feels like I am.

I feel like that all the time, even though it's for different reasons. I don't feel any pressure to post, but I feel it SO MUCH when it comes to being efficient in my work. A few months ago I found myself thinking back at the last time I truly had fun drawing and couldn't think even remember. I decided not to take on new jobs for a month and go back to studying for the first time in a loooooong while, and I feel it's doing me good : ) I want to enjoy what I do, I truly miss it

I understand this 100%! I go through phases of loving and disliking (I don't think I've ever hated drawing) art and most of it is because of these feelings. I'm really thinking of taking a study break too, and it makes me really happy to hear that it's working for you!!

I really really appreciate the courage it took to post something you may not be comfortable with. At the level I am at right now these look amazing to me and its a bit difficult to understand from an aesthetic perspective why you don't like them. But, I haven't drawn or shared any of my art with others for a while because I feel like I can't execute my own visions or feelings right on paper. Even though I don't have much of a following- I feel really self conscious of my skill and ideas and have been stuck dreaming about things and not actually drawing or sharing them with friends. As someone who is trying to learn to be more confident as well as learn more technique I love seeing this type of work especially for the way you feel about it. I think if you do ever reach portraits that you are happy with it will be awesome to have these versions to compare and contrast. Hope my thoughts help and I feel for your frustration!

Thank you for this comment, really! I needed to see it today. Even though I struggle with these things myself, I always want to encourage others not to stand in their own way. I can promise you that most people will never notice all the nitpicks and critiques you make on your art. These thoughts and feelings have held me back for years, but I have fought against them little by little and share more now than I would have five years ago. So I can promise you that if you feel stuck, there is always another way around. Also, please don't worry about the size of your following because it does not represent your worth as an artist! I've done the same and it never did me any good. Thank you again, and if you would ever like to talk then my DMs are always open!
