Part of the Witches conversation was him learning to trust his friends. This was that playing out. Loving himself is mainly how he learned how to empathize with everyone like Garf and Emilia finally. Because rather than just trying to solve a puzzle he actually was thinking about others again and forgetting about trying again in another loop. Because of the way he lost Rem and not being able to save her, Subaru chose to not get anyone else involved and convinced himself he should solve the problems alone. Also because of that fear of losing someone else, he started relying on Return by Death whenever anything went wrong. As a coping mechanism for the mental toll of relying on Return by Death, Subaru convinced himself his life wasn't worth much anyway and no one would care what happens to him. In that context the Witches telling him that what he was doing was cowardly makes more sense. Running to suicide as a convenient tool for a problem you can't deal with but are too afraid to ask for help Is cowardly. Convincing yourself nobody cares about you (when they Clearly do) as a coping mechanism to keep hurting yourself Is cowardly.
