Regarding your point about the psychology of the characters being simplified, I agree completely! I think it's at least partly the fault of the adaptation; the anime had to skip a lot of stuff to fit the entire manga in 13 episodes. Just as an example, Carol's mother has a pretty messed up backstory in the manga (though told in a somewhat comical way) that subtly reflects on Carol's upbringing as well. This is not to say that the anime is bad, just that, by necessity, it had to skip a bunch of stuff.
