A horrific and not soon forgotten movie. It's truly barbarous. You asked if Brad Pitt being Canadian was symbolism for other countries views at the time on the issue and while I can't say one way or another, this is set shortly before the American Civil War. The book was published a few years before the cessation of the South and ensuing war. Meaning not all Americans were okay with this lifestyle and not all were afraid to act upon those beliefs wanting change. This takes place in the deep south pre Civil War which is the worst of the worst. Mistress Shaw wasn't married to him. African Americans in that part of the country, being slaves, were not allowed to be married. Because they were "property" not people. She just became his favorite concubine earning her privilege and favors others didn't have. She was in much the same position Patsey was in at one point. Lothario is an old fashioned way of saying player or womanizer. Mrs. Epps wasn't doing anything shady at the store. She noticed Solomon looked at the note first instead of turning his attention back to her. People who can't read don't do that. They don't look at writing they just grab it because they have no clue what's on it anyway. Noticing that he looked at the paper, then answered, that led to her suspicious comment.

This one is not a easy watch, very infuriating, just 1 story, imagine the millions of others lost to history, slavery in Itself is a horrible thing, but the evilness in which the way they conducted it in the USA is unfathomable, the after effects of which you can still see today in how African-Americans are still treated there, this is a movie I can probably never watch again.
