I recommend yall go back and watch some of those earlier scenes in the sasuke/itachi flashback episodes now with all this information in mind. Might draw some new/different conclusions. As this is only my first rewatch, it was definitely a different experience watching those eps with these 2 eps context

What's your idea then? The Uchiha were gonna try and take over the village and it would have led to a world war. You would assume they have had talks and itachi couldn't convince them not to do it. Soooo what? He either goes to war and causes world war 4 or kills them before a war happens. Also it said the 3rd was trying to do it peacefully but danzo went behind his back immediately with the approval of the other 2 leaders and did the genocide.

@Kami don't see why he had to kill the kids and other civilians. The soldiers fine maybe but couldn't he have used his mangekyo to make the kids forget they're Uchiha and hide them somehow? Also don't see guys like Kakashi Guy and Asuma being cool with the Uchiha genocide, if Itachi wanted he could have established a powerful faction against Danzo that would have been supported by the Hokage himself. Ik Itachi was probably meant to be a good guy since part 1 but the way this is executed makes it seem like a last minute retcon to make Sasuke turn against the village lol

There were no other kids or civilians. Sasuke was the only child. That’s why he wasn’t part of the plot. Their dad was the mastermind and every other Uchiha was part of the plan to overthrow the village. That’s why it was such a serious situation. And you’re correct, others would not be ok with wiping out the Uchiha. That’s why it had to be blamed on Itachi. If the village wiped them out, other clans (Hyuuga, Aburame, etc) would have major issues with it. (If you step outta line, the Hokage will wipe you out.) Also, trying to establish a powerful faction against Danzo just makes the problem worse. It’s still civil war. Danzo and Saru are both on the side of protecting the village. All that would do is make the situation more divisive. that’s why it had to be a crazy criminal who decided to wipe out his own clan. No coup. No governmental genocide. No great ninja war. All the hate and anger fell on Itachi. And he was willing to do that to keep the village safe. The problem was that Madara told Sasuke and blew the whole plan up.

I honestly love that y'all are so skeptical about Madara's tale. Most people believe him straight up without considering his agenda. And honestly, it's S-tier gaslighting. It's a story that can make sense if you think about it, but you have to believe that he's a reliable narrator, which he isn't. Also, his emotional appeal to Sasuke was amazing. He puts Itachi on a pedestal and makes it seem like he is above judgment, but consistently reiterates that Itachi put Sasuke over everything, which allows him to paint the story as Itachi being manipulated by the Leaf (which tbf Danzo also is a shady dude so it's not out of the realm of possibility) which supersedes Itachi's vision of Sasuke being the Uchiha hero. Also, despite his praise of Itachi, he constantly hammers how much Itachi lied, which makes Sasuke doubt everything Itachi said to him while he was playing the role of the villain, which included his opinions on Madara. He subtly elevates himself as the only truth-teller in the situation. Can't trust Itachi because he's dead and when alive put on a facade, and can't trust the Leaf elders because why would they tell you the truth? That leaves Madara who is not trustworthy but Sasuke literally sees the measures Itachi went to in order to prevent that conversation from happening and there are some undeniable truths to what he was saying. The more times I rewatch this part, the more I love it. It's just so well-written. We see Sasuke is so skeptical of Madara, but as the story goes on his resistance becomes more and more feeble and by the end he's just so overwhelmed by the fact that his brother really did love him that much that he turns to what he knows best, revenge, and aims it at those he holds responsible.

Yeah, rewatching Sasuke's flashback at the end of Part 1 really shows how well thought-out this twist was. When you first watch it you, it feels like Itachi is developing a god complex and losing touch with humanity but after this you see how subtle yet obvious the clues were about the reality of the situation.

I think Kakashi ESPECIALLY younger Kakashi and those guys would have done what they needed to do to save the village. You form a faction to stop danzo. OK now what do you do about and entire clan of powerful shinobi ready to kill and take over the village? It's a tough situation and he took the hardest but most efficient path. Itachi isn't just a "good guy" he did a terrible thing to potentially save the world in his eyes. Also I feel like we forget that all these guys are military killing machines who's daily life is taking contracts to kill people they are gonna do what they gotta do.

Nope. The Uchiha wanted the coup. They were the ones that were set on it. That’s why they tried using Itachi to spy on the leaf for them by making sure he became an Anbu.
