Welcome to the slow burn of Luke and Lorelai. This is one of my all time favorite episodes. So heartwarming. The "yes Emily, you may go first" always makes me cry. Richard and Emily are so sweet.

WillowAndFog

Dammit, didn’t expect to cry this early in the morning. Thanks for sharing with us, losing a beloved pet is the hardest thing but talking about them keeps their memory alive. Can’t wait till next week.

Sorry this is gonna be a long post. I like your take on seeing Rory being mature in this situation because I kind of see it more as showing her naivety/ having a childlike view of the situation with her mother. I mean, it was definitely mature to want to talk it out, but the way I saw it was Rory’s kind of having a child view of, you guys should just talk it out and they’ll be fine (like the equivalent of just say you’re sorry. Hug it out and everything’s fine again). However, as I’m watching with this with you I’m seeing when it comes to Emily and Lorelai yes they have fights obviously on what’s going on, but it always seems to be fueled more by past history. Like I know Lorelai has always been very open with Rory, but there was clearly a ton more history that I’m not even sure if we know all of it yet at this point. And the fact that Rory thought you know, just go talk to your mom at the Christmas party, I don’t find is the correct time to try and talk about that situation because knowing Rory‘s grandmother, there is no way she was ever gonna get Emily to speak to Lorelei about that topic at the Christmas party in front of her friends. So even if Lorelai ended up showing up to the party, it really would’ve just caused more of a problem than it would fixing it at that point because that would just be another situation where Emily would once again say Lorelai‘s not listening and doing whatever she wants to do. Now that’s not to say that they shouldn’t talk about. They absolutely do need to work out their issues, and obviously it will take more than just one conversation. I also see it that Rory has never really known her grandparents that well like these Friday night dinners is where Rory is really being able to get to know them and have them in her life. Like yes they showed up for like holidays but seeing them every couple months for a holiday for a short period of time doesn’t really give her a chance to get to know her grandparents so to Rory they seem like these nice people who just wanna help out and be in her life and that’s great I mean she should have that relationship with her grandparents if she wants it, which is obviously one of the reasons that Lorelei does have Rory go to the party because Lorelei could’ve easily just said well then if I’m not invited Rory’s not coming, but she knows Rory wants that relationship with the grandparents and so even if Lorelai doesn’t get along with them, she’s still giving Rory the option to try and have that relationship.

i love this episode, its one of the first times you really see how much Luke cares for Lorelai and Rory. Luke and Lorelai's humor bouncing off of each other perfectly just makes them so much more fun as a duo, this is my 4th rewatch after a while and I forgot how much i adore their friendship during the slow burn

becca

that line hurts my heart, especially when he grabs her hand

Tereza

I think that she will kiss Luke but later, perhaps in season 3,4 and now in the beginning there will be just the connection between them. But he was amazing this episode, love Luke

Mari Castro

This was the episode that made me root for Luke and Lorelai. I know Max is a good man, but I never cared for him that much. The chemistry between Luke and Lorelai is incredible, and I always believed she could bring out his softer side. Luke has a reputation for being irritable and moody, but you can see how good, tender, and kind he can be whenever he does something for Lorelai, i just love him 🤭.

I do agree with you about Emilys pattern of deflecting and running away from her emotions, but i wanted to add that it is very clear that action and care is how she shows love. Emily and Richard as we have seen up to this point have a very traditional relationship. She would't know their insurance information or their stock options, and he as we have seen barely knows who they are employing as maids and cooks ect. Emily running around and demanding the best room and the fluffiest pillows is in my opinion both how she is coping and how she is showing her love for Richard, I just love the moment where she is in complete denial and trying to call someone and Richard just knows that she is terrified. Her breaking for a moment when he reaches out for her shows how well they truly know each other.

Elizabeth

Guys the slow burn comments are a little spoilery. Be careful lol

Elizabeth

I think we’ve seen some of the deflecting and avoidance patterns in Rory. Like running away when she kisses dean and not talking to her mom about it. I agree sometimes it seems like she’s more mature and I think that comes a little from the parentification of her being treated like a peer by her mom rather than a child. I also think Rory just hasn’t directly experienced a lot of the family conflict and heartache in general, so she’s naturally just more naïve and optimistic.

Angina is chest pain caused by decreased blood flow in the heart. It’s kind of a pre cursor to a heart attack. Emily is right Luke and Lorelai are both idiots.

Ashley G

Fun fact Lorelai gives Luke the blue hat because the costume department wanted a hat they could replicate if they needed too (and they did have to)

Aiden Cantwell

Idk why Lorelei remind me so much of Taylor swift

This episode is definitely one of my favorites in the first season. Not only do I love the Christmasy-ness, but I love that we finally get a look at how great of friends Luke and Lorelai really are. While I'm not a die hard fan for them together, I can't deny that I love it when the show gives us these moments between them. I love Lorelai and I love Emily for different reasons, but man, they're always so petty with each other, and it has always irked me. Charo is a Spanish actress, comedian, singer, etc. She was popular in the 60s and 70s and it was difficult to understand what she was saying a lot of the time. And Angina is when the heart doesn't get enough oxygen because of a lack of blood flow. If it goes untreated, it can cause a heart attack.

This episode kills me every time. To tell the truth I usually skip it as it reminds me too much of my granddad and he unfortunately did not make it all those years ago- so it really strikes a painful chord with me. But Luke in this episode is fucking amazing, like the fact he did not have to think about driving Lorelei to the hospital - that right there is an amazing person. 🥰☺️🥹

Looking back, the "I demand to go first" "yes Emily, you may go first' moment breaks my heart, cuz the actor who plays Richard passed away, while the actress who plays Emily is still alive. So if you think about it, in the end he still went first 💔

Yasemin

Glorious to watch this with you. I've seen this countless times, it's my favorite show of all time.

Yasemin

Grief is so complex and unique to everyone.

Emily Savidge

It's way after the fact but I'd disagree and say that max and lorelai are very similar whereas Luke and lorelai are on the same wavelength but are so different in a lot of ways
