Sorry this is gonna be another long one, but I just love this episode. It’s probably my favorite so far. I love seeing Lorelai being so protective of her daughter. It is sad she bailed on Luke, but I don't think Lorelai went to dinner planning on there being such a huge scene and definitely not planning to sleep with Christopher on the balcony of her old bedroom. Not quite sure why Lorelai didn't just give Luke the limited version of what happened - the big fight - and say she was sorry for not calling, but she was too upset to paint that night anyways. I know that Luke has a crush on Lorelei and wants to be with her but the fact that she spent time with Christopher no matter what she was doing. Luke had no right to be upset over that like something coming up and her not telling him I understand him being upset about that but then he also added someone when he asked was it something or someone. Like it has to hurt that he likes her and she was with someone else, but you can’t be upset with a girl for being with someone else when you haven’t even told her that you want to be with her or try to be with her like he’s tried to ask before and then things have come up like in the middle of him asking, but that doesn’t mean that she should have to wait around for him. I also feel that it’s not like it was just some random guy that she was going around sleeping with this was the father of her child someone that she has a true connection with. And yes, he has not been the best guy and he definitely needs to grow up and get his own life together, but after the emotional night that Lorelai had as they said right before the balcony scene, she felt 16 again so having Chris there and him being kind of her comfort at that time it’s sort of makes sense that she would sleep with him because that’s where her mindset was at the time. But when she had time to calm down, think about everything, she obviously realized that was a mistake and Christopher was not ready to take her and Rory on. And another fact to prove that Christopher wasn’t ready to take on both of them was that the whole time at family get together Christopher in no way tried to protect either Lorelai or Rory. I mean, he sat there the whole time listening to all the parents talking down to Lorelai. I mean, as you pointed out in the episode, Lorelai saw the Haydens starting to go in on Rory and so she took the heat. She protected her daughter and put the target on her back as you said, but when Lorelai was in the same situation, Christopher was completely fine with everyone talking about him being so great with his company and doing so well when really it was the other way around where Lorelei is doing great and has got her life together and he doesn’t.

What always bothers me about this episode is how Straub blames Lorelai for Christopher not going to college. He's convinced that Lorelai having Rory ruined Christopher's life and future, but that doesn't make sense because Christopher was never really present. He didn't have to give up his life to raise a baby, he didn't have to get a job to feed Rory; there was absolutely no reason for him not to go to college. If he didn't, it was his own fault; he probably wasn't good enough to go to Princeton. Nobody tells him that, but someone should have.

I’m so happy to see you in the “I hate Christopher” Club. Spoiler alert… It will get worse with him lol

I have to say, It’s so refreshing watching this show with you and hearing your perspective on these characters. I watched this show as a child when it was airing and Lorelai means so much to me personally. She was the first female character I ever saw as a kid that made me feel like it was ok if my parents never accepted me or if I never fit into the box that they wanted to put me in. The view on Lorelai has been so negative in recent years and I just can’t see how people can see episodes like this and not understand her. I get that she flawed and can sometimes be annoying, but I don’t get how people can’t see why she is who she is when it comes to her parents and Christopher. They see Christopher’s charm, good looks, and love for Lorelai and just completely ignore what an immature person and absent father he is. They see how much Emily and Richard love Rory, and the vulnerable moments that the audience sees but Lorelai doesn’t, and they completely disregard how they treat Lorelai. It’s been so great to see you dive deep into these characters, and the comments from the patrons as well.

It’s so maddening but logic doesn’t make sense when you’re bitter and angry. I’ve seen this happen so many times, even in my own family. Nobody wants to put the responsibility on the boy, It’s always the girls fault, even when it makes absolutely no sense.

Born in 1983 you say? Funny, because Rory was born in 1984 LOL

I agree that previously in other episodes Chris was made out to sound like he was super successful but in this episode he wasn’t. In this episode though he said “it’s for real this time” to Lorelei. Which to me means he does this a lot. He’ll start to get things together but it never actually goes anywhere. At least that’s my interpretation because it’s never explicitly stated. But even in this episode he lies to Lorelei’s parents that his company is doing well. I think that has probably happened a lot. He even says her parents have a lot of faith in him. Her parents are really optimistic in general about everything he does. I think it’s because deep down they’re hoping her and Chris will still get married one day and be a family. So they want him to be successful so that he and Lorelei will get married and have the life her parents have.

So much happened in this episode so to start. Christopher a man stuck at 16, I think as Lorelai puts it "he want's things he is not ready for" is a perfect way to describe him.All the grandparents say that Chris was ready to do "the right thing" and marry Lorelai, but she was the one who ran away and chose her own path. I personally think that he never really grew up because he had no clear instructions on what to do after Lorelai "Ruined the plan". While Lorelai can be vary immature she was forced to grow up because of Rory while Chris never did because he never actually took on the responsibility of being a parent. So now he does really immature things like telling Rory to lie and asking Lorelai to marry him. The pressure of having to be successful and thriving by his parents and society and constantly failing and lying about it is just sad. NOT AN EXCUSE just an explanation for his behaviour, he is an adult and not 16!!!!!!! - As for Lorelai, I think it's very clear that she still loves Chris but also KNOWS him, and he knows her which is why it becomes complicated. In any other scenario where you have an ex you can't let go of but is clearly not good for you the solution is simple (you distance yourself), but if thats you Baby Daddy and he's not entirely awful you would want him in your child's life just not in yours. Her immediately knowing this is an issue is so sad to see. - I Think Richard actually was showing how hurt he was in the scene with Lorelai now if he is right or not is another thing, but he did express how her actions made him and Emily feel (her not leaving the bed) (Him being shunned by friends and co-workers). I think that is why they aren't able to let it go even when they want a relationship with her and Rory. They feel like Lorelai don't understand their pain and humiliation and by forgiving her they would be saying what happened was okey and their pain not being valid. I don't really agree with him, as we have clearly seen they were not very involved or nice to Lorelai growing up and almost never see her perspective either. This is why I love this show, it's so complex and real. Nothing is ever black and white and characters are allowed to have flaws and bad traits and still be likeable.

Exactly! Lorelai chose not to marry Christoper so that he wouldn’t “ruin his future” by being tied down to her and Rory so instead, he floundered around on his own and ruined it all on his own but he lies to their parents to make them think that he is this outstanding business person in contrast to Lorelai who they all still treat her like she is a maid at a seedy motel and barely able to provide for Rory. When in reality, Lorelai worked her ass off to provide a stable and loving home for Rory as well as built a successful career and Christoper has nothing to show for the 16 years that have passed except for a leather jacket and a motorcycle (which he probably already had).

Lorelei and Christopher have not only known each other for forever, but they have been close friends since then. They have a genuine love and care for one another and an understanding of one another that has been present long before Lorelei got pregnant with Rory(always important to have, but is a huge deal when you're a kid/teenager). They bonded heavily over not wanting the rich, high society life that their parents have and found comfort and safety in each other because of that. So, it absolutely makes sense that Lorelei and Chris continue to have a soft spot for each other. It's a good thing that Lorelai stood her ground and didn't marry him just because she was pregnant. She was able to build a life that she was proud of and took the opportunity of being a single parent to get out of her parent's house and separate herself from them. While Christopher also took the opportunity of Lorelai having Rory to get away from his parents and the way they wanted him to live his life, he wasn't able to find his footing the same way Lorelai was. Unfortunately, he's always been one of those people that can't quite ever get things right. He's never seemed to be in the right place at the right time at any point in his life. He does have good intentions and does really try to make things work for him, but they never do(for one reason or another). Maybe he was somebody that needed the insane structure that his parents could have provided in oder to truly grow up or maybe not. Either way, he most certainly should not have lied about his success. I do understand, however, why he did it. He's always wanted to be the absolute best pick for Lorelai and has always wanted to make her proud. And I agree that him asking her to get married in this episode and the way he did it was uncool. I love that she stood her ground, though! She sticks up for herself pretty well! I, too, never understood why at the beginning of the season, they made Christopher sound like he had an abundance of success in his life, but in this episode, they changed that narrative. Maybe the writers forgot , or they decided to change that fact for the story they had planned. I laughed pretty hard when you said "dick move" when Christopher answered the cell phone at the diner, even though there's a "no cellphones" sign, because Lorelai ALWAYS answers her phone in there regardless of how much it annoys/upsets Luke or Rory.

This episode is so sad and complex, and I'm so glad you pretty much have sussed Chris out from the get go. He is just incredibly immature and like Lorelei said, he wants things he not ready for. I mean you can tell he really loves Lorelei, but as you said Audrey he wasn't really listening to her when she was trying to explain why it wouldn't work. And 100% agree it's not right putting Rory in the middle, I have had that with my parents growing up, and it is hard and exhausting, and you feel you can't please either parent 😭

Katy

I love we are all on the same page with ickstopher…I mean Christopher. 😂

Caitlin Green

I have such a love/hate relationship with Christopher.

ReadersReact

I love you taking an instant dislike to Chris. No matter how many times I watch this show I can never stand Chris. I won't get too much into the reasons why because of spoiler warnings, but he's a piece of work. And honestly, his lack of care towards his own daughter Rory breaks my heart for her every time. Everyone loves to talk about Lorelai and Chri's connection and all opinions are valid, but personally I don't think I could forgive Chris for leaving his own daughter. He only seems to show any concern for Rory whenever he wants Lorelai which is not a healthy situation for any of them.

My son's father pops back up once in a while to tell me how good he is now and then after a couple days is back to being crickets. No support, no call on birthdays or Christmas, no stability, no plans. It's so aggravating when your kid wants to know their father but you already know them and know it's never gonna get better. Hard stuff.

Chris is the WOOOOOORRRRRSSSTTTTT. I could go on a tangent about all the reasons why I strongly dislike this not man but I had surgery earlier this week and am too tired 😂 The main thing he should have done with his life was be a father to Rory and he couldn’t even do that

Yasemin

Midlife crisis for Christopher? A bit early in his early 30s. :)

Yasemin

Really fun watching this with you! My favorite show of all time, constantly on repeat, unlike any other show for me. It just feels like home. :)

Yasemin

Wow, I've seen this so many times, but never really noticed that Lorelai was possibly taking the focus away from Rory with her "Bush" comment. Great observation!

I think you’re being a bit harsh on everyone in this episode. Emily and Richard are certainly stuck in their ways and have a very narrow view of what is “right” but they aren’t misogynist in the way some of your comments imply. They aren’t ‘more’ angry and Lorelei for getting pregnant because she is the girl, but because she didn’t bend to their control on what to do next (Chris agreed to get married, she didn’t). You can see the difference between Richard and Emily’s anger about the past and Chris’s parents who actual are misogynist. Richard outright says a ‘mutual mistake was made between these two’ pointedly in contrast to the sexist ‘she seduced him’ of Strobe. And, all they ever talk about in regards to Rory is how smart she is and her future/college not at all about “a successful husband and 2.5 kids” misogyny. Chris is a tough one because he is extremely impulsive, immature, and a pathetic father. But I don’t think he is nearly as malicious or manipulative as you were reading him. Him and Lorelei have known each other their whole lives and because they each had tough relationship with their parents were essentially each others family. You can tell he deeply knows her, the chemistry and banter are undeniable. I agree, no one in their right mind would want them to get together, but they do have love for each other and he is sincere about wanting to be with her (though misguided). It’s very easy for people with long complicated histories to backslide or take comfort temporarily in the familiar
