All the flashbacks thus far happened in 1864 so Katherine lived with the Salvatore’s for under a year. She was manipulating everyone the moment she stepped into Mystic Falls. Because she very rarely (if ever) used compulsion on Damon he fully believed their relationship was real, not understanding she was manipulating him the normal way. Damon was deeply in love with her since he thought it was real so when he became a vampire those feelings intensified. I believe because of those feelings and most likely a form of guilt is something he held on to all these years and worked on ways to get her out of the tomb. Finding out she was never in there completely shatters his reality. When it comes to blame about Katherine’s capture, Damon pleaded with Stefan to not speak to their father and he promised he wouldn’t. He did anyway and even though he didn’t say please don’t kill Katherine, by pleading for sympathy for any vampire their father knew he could only be talking about Katherine. That is why Damon blames Stefan and why Stefan accepts his part in what happened. I love most seasons (lol) of this show and can’t wait for you to see what happens next. On a side note a lot of people didn’t like Damon at this point. While I enjoyed watching his crazy ass, I didn’t start fully liking him until later in season 1 but mostly in season 2.

Interesting fact: Michael Trevino (Tyler) and Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina on Glee) dated for around 3 years while both shows were still on the air. I believe you may have a turning point for Damon around episode 19. It’s been a while since I rewatched the entire series, but I do remember something significant happening in that episode.

To be honest, I can completely understand Damon. He’s learnt over a long period of time that he can’t trust his brother, yet he goes along with the deal and gets betrayed again. And it hurts him even more because he specifically asked Elena, quite openly and honestly, whether he could trust Stefan, and she lied to him too. Damon gets lied to, is taken advantage of whenever he’s useful, and then let down when it comes to his own wishes. Anyone who puts up with that for 150 years would, I reckon, automatically end up just like Damon is now. Does that justify what he did to Caroline? Absolutely not. And as much as I like Lexi, his decision was understandable, because she was a stranger to the residents and by exposing her, both brothers were safe, and the belief that there were no more vampires left would have saved their skins in the long run. It wasn’t nice, but it was understandable.

i think why Matt was kinda not cool with Caroline grabing his hand was because it was totally on purpose to show Elena that shes with him now which was really unnecessary in my opionion because Elena does not have feelings for Matt anymore at all

Okay, so... I don't want to spoil too much, but I will say by the time Katherine arrived in Mystic Falls, she had been a vampire for an extended period of time so she's had time to basically hone her skills. Like Ava said below, Katherine had pretty much everyone under compulsion (except for the founders because they were consuming vervain). The Salvatore family was a prominent family, one of the founding families. Which, by the way, all the founding families are the Salvatores, the Lockwoods (Tyler's family), the Gilberts (Elena and Jeremy's family), the Fells (douce bag Logan's family), and the Forbes (Caroline's family). Discord is a great way to do a viewing party, as well as Twitch. There's another reactor I react to that has done some live viewing parties and he always uses Twitch. Also, that reactor is watching TVD and he is finishing the series next week. It's taken him about 3 years (?) to completely finish the series and while it's bittersweet, I'm so happy to be restarting the series over with you! He's a huge Damon fan, and it's so funny to see the polar opposite of that! I love watching various reactions to shows because everyone's opinions are different and each person is always pointing out something new I've never noticed. I'm so so glad that you finally decided to watch this show!!! I had to step away from Patreon for a little while, but I was still watching your reactions on YouTube and as soon as I saw that you started watching, I had to come back and I'm so damn glad I did!

you're getting really good at predicting things audrey! um alaric is't a werewolf either sorry to burst your bubble Audrey... but... there is someone who shows up in season 2 that I think you may like. this show will keep on the edge of your seat. there's a lot of layers to this show and a lot of layers to each character. If i remember correctly I think the guy at the end who came out of the tomb at the end of the episode is harper? I was waiting for the WTF moment for when it's revealed that Katherine wasn't in the tomb all along. there's a big back story behind that... grams was awesome and I was sad to see her "die". paranormal aspect comes in the later seasons. be ready cause this show is insane with its twists and turns. you haven't the craziest shit yet... lol love your reactions as always, I can't wait for the next one. give weenie girl my love and kisses. i'm still watching the Pitt on danny's patreon, love his reactions too.

The thing with the torches.... Fire is a natural element. Witches can draw some of their magic from the elements (Earth, air, wind, fire). So while the open flames in a forest is a very bad idea, sometimes it is essential when it comes to witches. Also, fun fact, did you know that you can find out what type of witch you are by looking up your birthday? For example, my birthday is October 8th. I'm a Libra, and when I was looking it up, I found out that I am a few different types of witch. I'm an Enchantress witch, a Love & Sex witch, a Music witch, and a Spirit Witch. I know some people may not be okay with that, but it mostly relies on astrology instead of "witchcraft" and it's really interesting to read about it. ------------ Also, side note..... I think we all know who you're going to hate the most. Personally, I love him, but he's apparently a widely hated character. IYKYK

You’re analysis of Elena is wrong. Elena is a very compassionate person, she know damon was upset, it was a friendly gesture and stefan knew that, he was not jealous by it. The idea that she has to thank him every time he save her life she would do that every 2 episode, and the previous scene already show him that she was touched by his act. The lore has not been explored all that much yet. But vampire are what they are, their instincts is to feed and kill, they even have pleasure doing it, so you either give in to it or you try like hell to fight it like stefan. And the longer you have been a vampire, the farther you are from your humanity, all your family is gone and so is everything that connects you to your human life. So giving all that it is not surprising to see damon acting this way

Not to be nitpicky, but Damon never bit Elena. He may threaten, but he will never willingly hurt her. I don’t know what the deal is with those two, but as weird as it is, they seem to genuinely connect on some level. And I think you are correct that Damon is in love mostly with the idea of Katherine. As a soldier who experienced the ugliness and horror of war and the constant expectation of death in battle, I think he was more susceptible to the beauty and allure of Katherine than Stefan, who was protected from the hardships of war.

Going back to my comment on episode 10, there’s been talk of Paul (Stefan) & Nina (Elena) didn’t like each other initially when the show started, but Paul always says in interviews that he avoided Nina, when no one else was, to have the 2 characters have an authentic reaction to each other when they 1st meet. That’s why I said I don’t know how true it is. I have heard they didn’t get along initially though.

The spell broke when Bonnie’s grams dies that is why they could get through the portal. I am like one of the other members every time you assume something I am yelling at the screen and laugh 🤭 also I was like Audrey get ready to get mad when you said Bonnie’s grams better not die. I gotta say, idk if we really internalized what Katherine did to Damon. Her not caring wasn’t a “oh I got over him” type thing. She intentionally manipulated him and Stefan and nearly every man she meets. She took a man who was abused and broken and made him feel important and loved for the first time since he lost his mother as a boy. And in this episode he finds out that it was all a lie. That for 150 years the one person he thought truly loved him never loved him at all. You’ve mentioned before how deep love is for you. Imagine if the love of your life was locked away for just being who they are (in his perspective). Would you not do everything in your power to save them? Maybe not in the same way as him, but ultimately that was why he did everything. To save Katherine. I can’t imagine how shattering it would feel to realize it was all a lie. Good person or not, that would still be unimaginably painful.

I love re-watching S1 and seeing all the Elena/Matt stuff because like…it’s SOOOO obvious girlie has MOVED ON. Like even before Stefan in the pilot, she had zero interest in Matt lol And the second Stefan was introduced any chance Matt had at getting her back out of small town limited options/comfort was gone gone gone

At this point in my first watch of the series, I still felt really guilty for being attracted to Damon. (He is more my type than Stefan- without the killing Lexie and Bree and various innocent couples and taking advantage of Caroline parts). Now, it is so hard for my Damon-loving heart to not stick up for him for things that Audrey doesn't know yet. Deep breath. Enjoy the ride! Side note - I just had to call my husband in here to tell him about it before I typed it here - haha in therapy processing childhood trauma this week, I had to build a safe person - with very specific characterisics and he is largely a combination of Damon and my husband. My therapist watched the show when she was younger and got a huge kick out of the Damon-choice. If you stick around the show long enough - that may make sense to you - or not depending on your life experiences and values - but in either case I enjoy thinking about how and whether your opinions will evolve. There are valid arguments that he isn't redeemable, but I root for him for most of the series.

Plus... it hasnt really been talked about yet in the show... but vampires have a different sense of time and have super intense emotions... especially for things they cared about before becoming a vampire. Everything gets heightened

First your twilight comment, Bella did not give a f**k about Jacob the werewolf dude she only had her eyes for Edward in the books and in the movies the narrative that there was ever a competition is hilarious to me. Grams how you will be missed, a true badass. I already feel this is sometimes gonna be a hard watch as a Damon girl and a Stefan disliker. But I do appreciate different opinions on things. But I do think Stefan is just too “annoying” for me to find hot. I do love a brooding guy once in a while but he can be so insufferable sometimes. He is also a hypocrite in my eyes but I will let the show do its thing instead of spoiling (I also don’t expect you to agree with me just sharing my point of view 😊) I know this might be controversial but I don’t really care about the murdering in the show, as in I don’t hold the act of killing against the characters. I do take their motivation and if I cared about the characters that they killed into if I’m angry or not. But the killing itself is something my “The Vampire Diaries” moral compass doesn’t really care about. So Damon killing somebody or Stefan or really anyone is not so bad to me. I just find it inevitable that life isn’t something vampires value the same way humans do. Also I will die on the hill that Stefan is not hotter than Damon!!!!! It’s truly just preference and I prefer Damon 🥵

Ha yea no way is Stefan hotter than Damon in my opinion. I kinda agree with the killing for two reasons it a tv shows so ehh and They are Vampires. Vampires kill and feed on people and being immortal has to change your out look on humanity. I am a big time Damon girl and I find Stefan whiny and annoying. I did find the he became more tolerable from about season 6 on. I feel the same way about Elena too.

Yes I think that the immortality has a lot to do with it but also that humans are food for them, I would also start valuing humans life less after a few decades even if that is morally not great. I agree that Stefan became better in the later seasons but I still couldn’t like him as much as other characters because well to me he is just kind of a whiny red flag. Not saying Damon is a saint but at least he is less brooding than Stefan. I do find Stefan to be a deeply interesting character especially in season 3.

I was looking for this comment, and I completely agree. Elena is very kind and caring, and her actions have no hidden intentions other than supporting her friends. You can also see Elena and Stefan hugging each other in deep relief after escaping the tomb.

It's really sad that we lost Grams, and as far as that vampire in the tomb walking out, that was because they put the spell back up but it wasn't as strong as the original one and so when Grams passed the spell dropped, now all the vampires can get out.

It's really sad, but if Anna had just told them that her mum was in there and she wanted to free her, she probably would have got help. But there's that classic trope again: 'characters who don't communicate'. To be honest, I feel so sorry for Jeremy. The lad is (supposedly) 15 years old, has lost both his parents, then goes through everything with Vicki, gets more or less stalked until Stockholm syndrome kicks in, only to be betrayed again straight away. Meanwhile, Elena has gone from “I can’t be with you because you’re a vampire and really old” to “I love you so much, lets dance the devil’s tango” and has taken advantage of Damon, just as Stefan does, and sees absolutely no problem with it. But OMG, she’s comforting Damon because Katherine wasn’t in the crypt? How dare she! That look from Stefan was such a massive red flag for me, but I suppose it’s meant to be sold as ‘passion’.
