It’s easy to see why this is a fan favorite episode. Not only is this the episode that really, truly launched the Delena ship for so many fans of the show, but Paul Wesley really sold Stefan in the throes of his blood addiction. Fantastic work! I think people don’t give Elena’s character enough credit. She loves Stefan, so of course she will stick by him. Matt may be a safe choice, but she as much as admitted in the very first episode that she never felt a strong physical attraction to Matt even when they dated. Damon….that’s a different story. She definitely feels an attraction, but he is even worse boyfriend material than Stefan. Can you imagine how much work someone like Damon would have to do for Elena to ever consider him a viable suitor? I love this show.

I have been waiting forever for you to get to this episode for 2 reasons: 1. I’m glad u finally understand why Stephen doesn’t drink human blood, basically he’s an addict. They do give more backstory on his blood addiction in another season that helps the audience understand it even more. And 2. The Miss Mystic Falls pageant is actually a real annual pageant now, not on the pageant circuit but one that is physically put on in Covington, GA where Vampire Diaries was filmed. The contestants actually learn the hand dance that the court does in this episode and perform it to the same song “All I Need” by Within Temptation before they announce who the winner is. My sister was on the court and won second runner up in the first pageant they put on in 2023. Me and my sister started volunteering with the owner since then and worked many Vampire Diaries/Originals/ Legacies themed events including a party at the “Frat murder house” that comes in a later season. The actor who plays Mayor Lockwood, Rob Pralgo, actually EMCeed the last two Miss mystic falls pageants that have been put on and he is the sweetest, nicest, funniest man ever. After meeting him I definitely wish he had a bigger part in the show.

I really feel for Caroline. Yes, at first she’s a very one-dimensional character, that typical blonde cheerleader who’s got nothing in her head apart from gossip and boys. But that changes the moment the series really gets started, and since then she’s been struggling and bending and twisting. In her mind, she’s constantly competing with Elena, and because her family isn’t one of the founder families, she’s basically ‘not as highly regarded’ as the others. She works hard for her successes, whereas everything just comes easily to Elena. That’s also one reason why I thought it was great back then, and still do now, that Caroline won. The award itself isn’t that significant, but it’s important in the town and, above all, it’s important for Caroline’s self-confidence. When I first watched the show, I thought the relationship with Matt was great and Caroline was a bit of a pain. Now, so many years later, I have to say it’s exactly the other way round. Caroline gives Matt countless chances to walk away, but he doesn’t. I don’t even want to get started on that scene in the car from the other episode. But the fact that she had to apologise for holding her boyfriend’s hand, and he says he’s not sure if he’s ready for ‘this public relationship’, is such a red flag. Sneaking around kissing her and dancing the devil’s tango is okay, but publicly committing to her isn’t? WTF? Girl, run!

This is one of my favorite episodes of season 1, I am team damon. I been damon girl from the start (yes i hate him occasionally, like when he killed lexi ), started to love delana in episode 11, on their road trip, and I remember watching this episode for the 1st time and freeaking out and rewatching the dance scene so many times. Love the music in this show I remember making playlists of it
