That bit about “you wondering what your mum’s like, and she’s a cold-hearted bitch who wants nothing to do with you and just wants to take advantage of you” – yep. I can confirm that. It’s a shitty feeling. I’ve been through it, and the first thing I did back then when I turned 18 was to sue her for the unpaid maintenance. It was the same courtroom, the same judge as at my parents’ divorce, and she lost again. It doesn’t bring anything back; it doesn’t silence the voice in my head asking ‘why?’, but it’s a liberating feeling to know that if she ever needs ‘help’ – a care home, nursing care or the like – I won’t have to pay a penny for it. I could tell so many terrible stories now, but let me put it this way: it might seem cold-hearted of me, but just because we’re related by blood or DNA, she means absolutely nothing to me, and it’s good to know that the state can’t force me to support her should anything happen. Just because a woman gave birth to you doesn’t make her your mother. That’s something special, and nobody has to call someone ‘mum’ or ‘dad’ just because they’re related to them.
