The actor that plays Tina, Jenna, flunked on purpose because Tina wasn't supposed to be as good as Rachel in this scene, but I actually liked her a lot more than Rachel because she really projects Maria's innocence. I think Rachel is too pushy to pass as naive. There will be an episode where the plotline is "who's the best Maria?"

I think it was the fact they changed Tina's to an alto, and the off-key thing as well. And every one of them ignored Mr. Schue's conducting, Inside Joke maybe? Who knows? 🤷‍♀️Finn was actually upset about something else earlier in the episode, also after this scene as well, but no not jealous. And Kurt was upset about something as well but not jealous. THat's all I can tell you on that. Or will tell you without giving too much away. Darren and Lea always sang well together, probably why they had their LMDC tour a few years ago. They are still best friends today.

I actually really liked Jenna's (Tina) version as well. Jenna and Lea have known each other since they were 8 years old, they met on the Broadway circuit. Tina messing up that last note was storyline driven as it was to highlight her insecurity and lack of confidence. It was done in the first season, she wasn't competing with Rachel for the role of Maria, although she was dealing with a jealous Rachel who had wanted the solo at the time.
