I believe in his interview he comments that he was healing from surgery and was told to NOT sing. Jeremy was supposed to sing the part for that rehearsal and Jack got into it and let go. Lol

Fun fact this movie exist because Fox said to Hugh Jackman you can do any film you want we will green light it as a reward for doing the last Logan wolverine movie. Everybody thought he was crazy and it turned out to be one of the greatest films of the year.

If I understand correctly, this whole get together was Hugh Jackman and others basically convincing the studio or producers or whomever to agree to the movie. (Might be wrong on that) And he wasn't supposed to sing because he'd just had some skin cancer removed from his nose and had stitches, so Jeremy was singing his part. But since this was a passion project of Jackman's, I think he couldn't help jumping in. The impression I got was Jeremy was singing well technically but he wasn't selling the emotion like Hugh could. He ended up popping his stitches and bleeding at the end. Poor Jeremy though.

I saw Hugh Jackman live at the Hollywood Bowl in fall 2019 and he is FANTASTIC live. Not only were his vocals beautiful but he is a wonderful story teller.

You mentioned that Jeremy looks disappointed. That is because he is. Hugh wasn't supposed sing, as you said, he had a skin cancer removed from his nose. Jeremy was there to sing for Hugh and he was also hoping to be considered for the role that Zac Efron got. Jeremy was also sick and pushed through to perform. He talked about it and there is video of it on youtube then he actually sings this song.
