Now that Beanie is leaving Funny Girl, do you think Lea Michelle should be her replacement?

I’m excited to hear your reasons…

Comments

Jennifer Dominguez

Well I totally get that some people are going to hop in here and say this was meant for her, I frankly don't feel comfortable with how quickly this turnaround is from her being exposed for her bad behavior to going into hiding and then being rewarded. I strongly feel that she's a great vocalist and yes we all know this is her style but morally does not feel right to me.

Mia

I would never say a role was made for someone. While I think Beanie is a talented actress, a great vocalist, she is not. I know that she’s been a fan of Barbra and Funny Girl, but sometimes we should be realistic about our capabilities. I don’t necessarily have a preference about who takes over the role as long as Beanie is gone and someone who can handle the technical parts of singing is put in her place. And tbf to Lea, someone can’t grow if they’re not given the room to grow. It’s been two years and she’s had a child in that time, so that’s an experience that’s likely completely changed her. I wouldn’t say it’s a reward if she’s has to audition for the role. Everyone’s judged her for events that occurred years ago by the time they came out. I’m not disputing whether or not they’re true, I’m just saying we don’t know if she’s worked on herself in that time and took a look in the mirror and re-evaluated her behaviours.

I think she would be a great pick for Funny Girl!! But Jennifer was right does she deserve it after the everything that her cast mates said about her in the past??

Gemma Rivera

I think there's a reason why they didn't pick her as the headliner in the first place. She's been vocal about wanting that role for years. She's a proven vocalist and we know that she can handle the songs from that very musical. I just think that if she gets the role, she may turn it into some kind of "I told you so" or "You should have just picked me in the first place" I don't really think that this would be an opportunity for growth for her. I always tell my clients that if you want people to see you differently, then you have to show them something different. I think her moving on to show us something different would be a better growth opportunity for her

JustAlyssa87

Hahaha… Yes, yes I do. Unless you know her personally and can attest to the person she is today, you can’t really say whether she deserves something or not. Having kids changes you. My sister was an alcoholic for years, has two kids, and did a complete 180 and has been sober almost 2 years for them. I don’t know her, but I know her talent. I’d go see it, anyone else is free not too. I’m 35, too old to argue about whether or not a celebrity I don’t know is a good enough person to get work. I always assumed most celebrities weren’t the greatest people anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

ross

Yes. She’s an incredible vocalist and we all know she’d kill it, plus she’d be a big draw for tickets, especially if paired with Jane Lynch, it would be a Glee reunion. However, I think she has some damage control to do first.

I would Love to see Leah in Funny Girl. Art imitating life/Life imitating Art type of deal.

Jasmine Lambert

i think the time has passed for lea to play fanny, i'd love to see someone new and unknown come into the mix so we can have a fresh take since we've already seen what lea can do with the songs. plus the show isn't getting the best reviews even with the big names so this could be an opportunity for them to freshen it up and take a risk with somebody new who doesn't already have ties to the role

LisaMarie_82

When Leah did "rain on my parade" live at the Tony Awards a few years back I was exhausted by the time she finished the last note and she made it look like a easy breezy walk in the park. To me in my, humble, (Untrained, not professional, tone deaf, and I couldnt carry a tune in a bucket) opinion, she has one of the top 3 or 4 voices of all time.

leslie martin

everything i know from "funny girl" is bc of glee. i don't really care that much about the show or about broadway in general, but if that means i get to hear Lea sing again, i'm all up for it!! also, i don't know Beanie from anything but the quick vids i saw of her singing in "funny girl" but... yikes.. i really didn't like it, she very much so have an annoying voice to my ears lol i don't know much about funny girl, but i heard Lea sing some of these songs, and i know her talent, so i'm down for that! but i'm a bit scared for her bc everyone has been waiting for years for her to play that role and the critics are gonna be extra judgy bc of that!

Caroline S

Id certainly love to see her do it! She recently said in an interview that she feels ready to go back. Id love to see her back on Broadway period. Doesnt have to be Funny Girl (which has great songs, but i personally found really boring) As great as her voice is recorded she really shines live. Also agree with funny girl being a somewhat scary comeback due to the immense expectations people and critics would have . But if she wants to do it and gets the opportunity im all for it. The fact that Funny Girl is directed by the same guy who directed Spring Awakening would probablybwork in Leas favor if she wants it.

I don't know how open the Jewish theatre community would be to having someone who's non-Jewish playing Fanny Brice (I genuinely don't know so if anyone who's more familiar with the libretto would contribute that'd be great).

Louise

I would love to see her be Fanny.

I'm Just Alex

I don't think this would happen, but I hope Beannie's standby Julie would play Fanny full time. I've heard fantastic things about her performance.

Jennifer Dominguez

Saying why not cancel other celebrities is not a good argument. The unsavory behavior of some does not take away from yours and especially for an adult that grew up in this business to be this rude with this much corroboration from others. I just don't get the big deal enough for you to answer to every single message you don't like. For two seconds I'm like is this someone from Lea's camp or something? because Lol. I get stanning someone but to put this into perspective, I'm a person that generally keeps up with pop culture because it's related to my work. My opinion doesn't come from deciphering Lea's DNA or caring about her inner circle. Speaking as someone who doesn't have google alerts for Lea Michele, I have not seen or heard about any widespread Public change. And yet, I'm not digging for it either, True. Believe it or not there are ppl that don't know which hair strand started growing on her head on which day; shocking, I know! What I'm saying is that this (again at the time this 20 SOMETHING year old working professionally since childhood) actor has not managed to change her public persona enough for it to feel ok to have this seemingly sudden comeback to me. To Me. She was a whole ass adult at time of the allegations are referring to. This was not her first job in media, this is not the first time she's been accused of bad behavior & she does not come off as a dumb person either. If you get accused of being so egotistical, racist, and mean as she's been accused, I personally don't think this is the time to quietly do the work and lay low and not be public about the actions that you're setting forth to be a seemingly decent person or project that. If you've ever been accused of something you vehemently know you didn't do, i know i would be pissed as hell, sharing my side, trying to get this stuff as far away from my name as possible. But then again, I could be wrong. KJ, since I can't give you timestamps for her baby's nap schedule or tell you lea's brunch preference, my opinion is not valid but it is my opinion none the less. Literally since her audition she's come off as a piece of work, this is not completely left field, isn't about Naya, and has been shared about her for years. This is not new conversation. She's an amazing singer, has a douchey rep, and like you said isn't good for the role at this moment. Just because you stan her doesn't mean she's flawless and just because i don't know her favorite afternoon snack as a kid doesn't mean that i can't feel that was is being presented to me isn't working and that's ok buddy. People can have diff thoughts about things.

My friends and I met Lea years ago. It was not a great experience and she was not very nice at all but that was years ago. She was young and so were we. I would hope in those years she has grown and hopefully become a better version of herself. She is a wife and mother now and those things tend to give you a new perspective on life and the example you want to be for your family. No matter what she has always been a talented Broadway actress and I'm confident she will be fantastic.

Carleen

I don't. Simply because I think it would be stunt casting at this point. I'm not a fan of stunt casting. The reviews haven't been great for the show, so the first instinct would be to slot a "named" actress into the role to increase the box office. Does that mean I don't think she could do it? No. I think she could do it. But I would like to see some new, wonderfully talented person come in and make that role her own. My two cents. (In actuality, I don't really care much. I've never really liked the show. LOL)

Felicity Drinkwater

Absolutely, Lea is meant for broadway and is in love with Barbara Streisand

LisaMarie_82

Hello friends....I enjoy reading the comments some I agree with some I don't but either way I like the chatting. When I read her apology post that was everywhere my hope/beliefe is this for what it's worth. I watched an interview with Shuster/Sylvester from 6 or 7 months ago, and they both said that the "kids" worked non-stop on the show, then the back to back Glee tours for 4/5 years straight, and many of them went from normal to insane celebrity status over night. Then Cory was fighting addiction which can be painful full for their loved ones as well then he died and for her her died twice because she had to relive the whole thing while singing on the show. From what I've read he was her heart and soul and after that is when things got really rough on set, (obviously I wasn't there but from what we have all read about it, seems fairly accurate). Fast forward she posts something to show her support to a cause, and then the responses blow up in her face.. Maybe the responses she got caused her to stop and think about her treatment of others and how her actions and behaviors were cruel to someone of the same race she was (now an adult, and no longer hurting over Cory, or being a brat/diva) wanting to show support for and had compassion for. It's possible she didnt realize or think about how her words may have been heard until they told her. Either way, only the people who were present will ever know what she said or what she did. I've been judgmental in my life a time or 2 about things I had no knowledge of or background for, so now that I'm older I try to give the benefit of the doubt and not be too quick to condemn.

Annie Willow

I want to believe that she has turned over a new leaf but with as intrinsically connected Funny Girl is to Glee, her character, and to the previous allegations of her bad behavior on set, I do not think that it would be a good move her professionally to play Fanny now. I do think, though, that it is time for her to move on to some other show and to see her make her mark on it and absolutely excel at it. She was born to star on Broadway and I would love to see her perform!

I Am Not Chamari

I think people are being a little too kind about Lea here. I get that we don’t technically know her and that we DO know her talent, but everything points to her being a terrible person. The allegations about her were not just from Glee, but all the way back to when she was freaking 11 on Broadway doing Ragtime. They also are as recent as her stint on The Mayor. And if her black co-stars and people that worked with her said that her horrible comments and behavior were racially charged microaggressions, then they were. And for her not to even remember a lot of the specific instances people called her out for is even worse. So, you know, can she do the role? Sure, absolutely. Should she get the opportunity to do the role? Absolutely not.

KJ Dogmom

So after some reflection about what happened between myself and some others. We all have a right to our own opinions, and we can absolutely disagree, I don't think now that this was the place for it and I apologize for more to Audrey for that happening on my behalf. This is not twitter 2020, I don't know why it becomes what it becomes. I felt I was defending her second chance, not her behavior. I choose to wait and see if she changed by observation, and I can't do that if she doesn't get a second chance from producers whether it be television or broadway. I also choose not to believe second-hand stories, my grandmother always said to me, believe half of what you see and none of what you read or hear. Meaning take it all with a grain of salt. But again these are my feelings and opinions and I don't say others have to feel the same way. Please understand that. Some people do jump on bandwagons when drama occurs. Just how it is. So with that my answer is no I don't think she should play Fanny. I believe she should go to another show and make it her own. Let the understudy have her moment in the sun a little longer, and give her a chance to be a star in another show someday. This can help her get starring roles later even if the play is bad. Lea is established and can go star in another play and make it her own. and maybe not something that was on glee for her character. I think she needs to separate herself from Glee and Ryan Murphy productions for a while.

Amber Harrison

My quick two cents: No, for Lea. I think it would bolster her already overly entitled sense of self that she presents to the public and apparently in private. A great replacement choice for me is SHOSHANA BEAN!! Just nominated for a Tony and she’s played Fanny before in some smaller productions. She killed it, apparently. If not Shoshana, then the understudy.. give her shot, make a new star!!

Bec

No, I don’t think Lea Michele should be her replacement because she sounds awful to work with and I wouldn’t do that to the current cast. The last thing they need now is someone with a reputation for traumatizing coworkers in the lead. I’d personally love to see her in this role, but not until she’s demonstrated that she can do it without damaging coworkers.

Henry Munoz

I think Lea should replace Beanie. She has matured and I believe learned from her past issues. I think she was someone that was driven and expected perfection from herself and her cast mates.

Henry Munoz

This role is perfect for her and will give her many fans a place to enjoy her beautiful voice and underrated acting skills.

Michelle Viau

No. She has a beautiful voice but she sounds like an absolute nightmare to work with. Maybe she's matured, but she's going to have to work hard to show it; and I feel like the musical will pay the price for her bad rep.

Lauryn Shealy

She’s perfect for the role. I just hope she’s matured and grown into a better person since those stories came out…

Jessica Lyme

I think that Beanie should be replaced by her understudy/standby.. I haven’t seen the show myself, but I’ve heard from the theater community that she is phenomenal and she deserves this chance to shine and make a name for herself.
