Maybe I’m alone in this opinion, but honestly I’m not thrilled with either version. This song is a prayer, and yes it’s fueled by desperation in some ways, but my favorite versions are the ones that are more reserved and introspective, especially at the end. Valjean is sending a prayer to the heavens, it’s not meant to be a huge showstopper. Having them both go into a full belt on the last note just takes me out of the headspace of the song and the real emotion behind it. But that being said, I do think Kurt’s version is more in line with the spirit of the original so I prefer his, if I had to choose.

I'm so glad you did this song, and I love your analysis of it. I think you hit the mark in that neither quite got down and reached the depth of the song, but I often wondered if that was intentional because the characters are only just college freshmen here and so are still getting their teeth into the acting part of musical theater (or maybe I give the writers too much credit). Either way I do love Kurt's solo version better and think you should hear it even if you don't do a reaction to it. So here you go! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK2PtgWbw6A Chris gets the introspection in the song but you do hear his inexperience in singing something like this. Chris never got formal vocal training really until Glee, though he was in a few community theater musicals. He once said vocal coaches didn't want to take him on because of his unusual voice I guess.
