This is a lecture and a demo I gave for Newton Art Association, and I'm happy to share it here on Patreon! Think of this video as an overview on the topic of underpainting, and as an exercise to try at home. The reference image, a self portrait by Velazquez, is attached. Enjoy!

I have been working on this underpainting on a Raymar arches oil paint panel-the solvent doesnt seem to erase very well-what panels do you use and can you explain why am I having issues?

Hello Ken, is it possible to do this with Burnt Umber instead of raw umber? Unfortunately that's the one I have. If not, then I was wondering: I have alternatively, white titanium and black ivory, as well as other pigments such as vermellion red, yellow ocre, yellow cadmium, blue ultramarine, prussian blue. Is it possible to mix these colors to get a pigment as dark as yours (raw umber)? Thank you so much for your answer, Luis

Will using linseed oil have the same effect as for example Gamsol when using it in a painting to erase?

May I know the suggested painting size for this Valazquez self portrait? So I know which area to tape off and get the frame right. Also how do I find out how to find the frame size for practicing these masters work? I tried asking AI but the answer was vague and incorrect.
