Nato's observation that Zionism for him was class based is interesting to me, because observing from outside Judaism I wondered if that was the case. One of the events in history I'm most fascinated by is the Battle of Cable Street in London in 1936, because it is one of the best demonstrations of long term solidarity and intersectionality I can think of - working class Jews, dock workers, East enders, even Muslim ship crews came together and stopped the British Union of Fascists in their tracks. Jump back to 1917 and the Balfour Declaration. Arthur Balfour, bless his aristocratic British heart, was a raging antisemite. The reason he was so enthusiastic about a Jewish homeland was to get Jews out of Britain so they stopped causing trouble. But, and this is my opinion, not the rich Jews like the Rothschilds. Hand out some titles, political power, make some judicious marriages... yes they were Jewish, but they were "the good ones." The Jews Balfour wanted gone from Britain, I think, were the working class Jews like the ones who lived in Cable Street. They were TROUBLE. They were educated. They were organised. They... WERE STAUNCH UNION PEOPLE. Many of the leaders of the London East End Jewish community were also leaders of trade unions. And they forged links with other unions (like the Irish Catholic dominated dock workers). To men like Arthur Balfour, those working class Jews were TROUBLE, and he wanted them gone from Britain! Thing is, one thing those working class Jews weren't, is Zionists. They'd learned, through the years, it's far better to build a community where you are, to build links with others like themselves. They wanted to stay where they were and build homes there. The Zionists in Britain in 1917 were from the wealthy and professional classes. And interestingly, they were the ones who did fuck all to push back against the British Union of Fascists. I know the situation was completely different in eastern Europe, but I'd love to compare to western Europe, particularly France, because France also pushed back against a fascist takeover.
