(NOTE: We recorded this a few hours before Israel bombed Iran, so expect a discussion of that next week!)

Matt and Daniel are joined by music critic and creator of The Needle Drop, Anthony Fantano to get the knives out for Thom Yorke's muddled stance on Gaza and Israel, to declare Gen-X as jaded as Mila Kunis in a video for a third-tier Aerosmith song, and to definitively adjudicate the Kendrick-Drake beef by Roberts Rules of Order.

Super dark time to be alive, but I love all my fellow piggies

Martina Madden

And even though I haven’t begun listening to this, which just dropped, I can’t wait because I need something to brighten my mood. So sad thinking about the chaos and death and destruction in the Middle East.

Nuno

Badthony Hasbaratano, the internet's most unexpected crossover

Martina Madden

Is it just me or are more Zionists lashing out & imploding these days?

Bad Hasbara

As the note above says, we recorded this BEFORE world war 3 popped off but don’t worry there will be an Iran vs Isnotreal episode next week

Magda Len

Dude Israel is burning

Magda Len

It's like the 7th wave of ballistic missiles now. Omg

Magda Len

I'm euphoric eventhough I know we are likely heading into a nuclear Armageddon. I don't even care. As long as Israel dies I'm happy to die.

suki

Listening from Cairo with ❤️ after spending Friday at a VERY busy checkpoint en route to the Sinai and Rafah! We could’ve used some standup to pass the time and ease our nerves as they held our passports and refused to let us pass.

suki

oh darn

A light 7/10

9/10 for Jew Vs The Volcano. 10/10 for Matt's characterization of Portuguese.

Good call on Afghan Whigs’ “Gentlemen”, that’s a great album and not one that often gets mentioned as a 90s classic. So sleazy and tortured (it was more on the mark when I was in my 20s to be honest). I saw them on that tour and they covered Thelma Houston’s “Don’t leave me this way” 😍

Magda Len

Ya imploding and exploding from what I've seen.

B. Getz

What De La album? I'm not watching I'm listening

Royal Scam is the 🐐 Steely Dan LP, followed by Katy Lied, & I've got Aja on the bronze podium

I respectfully disagree about Thom York's ambivalence - it sounds to me like he's a true believer in Israel who can't take the smoke he'd get from clearly stating his convictions. His statement reminds me of people who criticize the the means and the "optics" of leftist actions (ie the encampments), because they don't want to admit that they don't support the ends either.

suki

Aww, thank you! It’s honestly a privilege after feeling so helpless for so long. But there’s not a lot of room for direct action, even being this close.

Veronica H Song,AKA The Nightingale

As Thom York so beautifully put it: "we hope that you choke, that you choke". Also, speaking from experience in the Israeli BDS movement, Thom York was never NOT a condenseding prick, very rude and aggressive. Once again we see how money, mostly A LOT OF IT, changes people

Lads, Matt made the "Deaf Frenchman speaking Spanish" re: Brazilian Portuguese episodes ago (last year?) and I genuinely almost weed myself while laughing driving home from work when I heard it (arse hasn't been the same again after giving birth). I'd completely forgotten hoe he phrased it, so thank you so much for repeating that beauty again today. So evocative - so on point (no dis to Brazilians - it's my favourite language). Thank you for the genuinely hearty laughs.

Being gen x is no excuse. There are many great gen x artists, even Anglosphere ones, with an actual conscience who HAVE been paying attention even when Thom and Radiohead has not: Blonde Redhead/Kazu Makino, Garbage/Shirley Manson, Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder, Primal Scream/Bobby Gillespie, Saul Williams, Yasiin Bey/Mos Def, Massive Attack/all their members, Gorillaz/Blur/Damon Albarn. That’s not even to mention the ones who Radiohead literally toured with— Deerhoof— or guys they worked with repeatedly and once called friends— like Jonathan Glazer, the director of Zone of Interest AND Karma Police and Street Spirit. If Radiohead are so racist they don’t care whether millions of Palestinians (or apparently, Lebanese, Yemenis, Iranians, the ENTIRE FUCKING WORLD via nuclear war) are ethnically cleansed, tortured or murdered from the skies, if they value one captured IDF soldier so much higher than thousands of civilian children in Gaza, at the very least it would still have been nice to stick up for their not-even-anti-Zionist, just-reasonably-called-for-ceasefire Jewish friend Jonathan Glazer when he was being demonized by an entire industry in Hollywood. But no, they said nothing. Also thanks as always for the work you guys do. I’m not really a Fantano head in terms of his music tastes (though I certainly respected his response to Thom, I’m a bit more of a poptimist/yachtimist than him) but I almost always love Daniel’s what’s the spin segments. Joni Mitchell 1972-1979 has been my favorite artist at many points in life (also 1982-1989 tbh, I’d even take Chalk Mark or Dog Eat Dog over Ladies of the Canyon and Clouds). Even used to post on a thankfully-defunct Radiohead message board in the Thief/Rainbows era with a Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter avatar… also don’t feel bad for criticizing Thom and causing his tantrum Matt, I criticized Nigel Godrich’s production (Thief was not his best work) on that message board once in like 2006 and the dude popped out from nowhere in a burner account to angrily debate me, an event which is clearly to blame for the improvement heard in their sound on In Rainbows. Although, gotta be honest, as I grew up and listened to more music, I started to feel like even Radiohead’s best albums were strong 8s or very light 9s at best. Leaving aside their embrace of deranged genocidal ideologies, this isn’t a band of innovators, nor hitmakers whose music anyone is going to remember in a few decades, and I wonder if their dawning awareness of that fact is behind their apparent indifference to the end of the world. If they have to live in a world where even indie hipster record nerds are finally waking up to the fact Sade’s Love Deluxe or, hell, Rihanna’s Anti are more “important” and artful than OK Computer ever was, they’d rather just thank Israel for taking the whole world down in flames.

Thom York is an insufferable prick.

Thom Yorke left his partner while she was dying of cancer, after years of cheating on her with young fans. He sued other artists for ripping off his songs (they didn’t— there was virtually no resemblance), songs that were mostly plagiarized by him from other artists in the first place. He publicly made fun of David Bowie and refused the idea of collaborating with him (!) when the latter, a huge fan of Radiohead at the time, asked if they’d like to work together (sidenote Ziggy Stardust, which he rewrote as The Bends title song, is one of the many songs Radiohead copied or sampled without credit). Also even the guy’s name is fake. For his entire childhood up to age 18 he went as Tom Yorke, even using that spelling on his own handwritten liner notes in Radiohead’s early demos. Also, Thom helped get one of the band’s own employees killed through his greed and hubris. While they are not the only party to blame (legally speaking, they evaded guilt, and a low level engineer was scapegoated instead) Radiohead used shoddy stage construction along with unusually-heavy custom installed rotating jumbotrons in their 2012 tour, which predictably resulted in an accident when the stage scaffolding in Toronto collapsed under the weight of their unusually heavy equipment, crushing and killing a man, Scott Johnson, who was working as a technical assistant to their drummer Phil Selway. Thom Yorke never apologized or took any kind of responsibility for this. ps. fun fact about Burn the Witch. It was not intended to be about the scapegoating of immigrants, or a denunciation of the far right, as Radiohead fans were once told by Pitchfork. In 2017 Thom Yorke revealed the lyrics were actually intended as a cry against the demonization and scapegoating of… pedophiles. (maybe he should join Drake’s lawsuit?) Matt: The first track from 'A Moon Shaped Pool', 'Burn the Witch', it seems to be implicitly about people looking for political scapegoats. Thom: It was originally kind of written about the tabloid witch hunts of the pedophiles a long time ago. The original impetus was reading some reports about -- I mean they still do it now, it's what they're good at -- when whatever newspaper it was started the witch hunts, started naming where these people lived and all that stuff. (These are real quotes from a BBC 6 Music interview, archived on the premier Radiohead fansite https://citizeninsane.eu/music/amsp/burnthewitch.html)

Yeah, it’s not a normal “centrist” or even “liberal Z” statement, which would have entailed the usual “I condemn Khamas and blame them equally or more as Netanyahu” bit, but would not have strayed into the “all Free Palestine peaceful activists are literal antisemite terrorists” bit. What he’s saying— that there’s no acceptable form of resistance to Israel, even the kind of resistance renouncing all violence (ahem BDS)— is, of course, the exact subtext of liberal Zionism, but you aren’t supposed to say it out loud, you’re supposed to lament “where is their Gandhi?” and pretend that the Gandhis weren’t all murdered and maimed and tortured in prison and disappeared by Israel and pretend that you’d whole heartedly support the Palestine version of “Gandhi” if one were to appear at any time. But no, he just came out and admitted that he thinks Palestinians shouldn’t have any freedom ever. Which is I guess predictable as he values his own peace of mind higher than worrying about the genocide of an entire people.

Joni M fan since I bought Hejira aged 15 at HMW in London. Now listening to Court and Spark for the nth time. Very disappointed about her blackface story though. C’mon Joni - fess up
