I was in Greece and Bulgaria earlier this month and there were a lot of Israeli tourists. Most of them were discrete and polite but there was one group of very loud and annoying young men who seemed like they might've just gotten discharged from the IDF. It took every once of discipline for me to walk by without saying anything as they played frisbee in the middle of the fucking trail on Rila mountain in Bulgaria. I'm not one to start shit with people, especially on vacation, but I get it. I think the more off-beat destinations in Greece attract a more liberal urbane type of Israeli tourist, but the cheap resorts in Bulgaria attract young men who want to drink a lot.

That Netanyahu speech was the worst thing I’ve ever heard. I’m not sure what to think about it. If I were him I’d worry that I was being kept in power to serve as a future scapegoat. It felt borderline abusive. At the very least the person who came up with the QR code thing is a sadist. I’m not good with public speaking but those clips gave me a full body cringe. Can’t they just send him to a nice Dutch prison cell without exterior windows? Where’s the humanity?

Israelis will find more hospitable hosts in eastern countries like Bulgaria where there is such a vitriolic hatred of Muslims. It’s like the Peter Griffin line, “I know Jews is bad but thems is worse.”

Islamophobia plays a role, but in Bulgaria specifically (where I'm originally from), the Euro-liberal view is basically "West Good, East Bad", and I think Israel-Palestine is largely viewed through that lens. Russia Bad, America Good, therefore Israel Good. I think that's changing in real time though.
