Matt and Daniel are joined by author Peter Beinart to examine the toll taken by supremacist ideology, the curious demographics of the various “top anti-semites” lists, and Van Jones’ trajectory through the Activist-To-Embarrassing One’s Self On Real Time With Bill Maher pipeline.

Peter has been an ally for a long time. It was always refreshing to see him on mainstream. The kindness in defending Hanan Ashrawi on CNN many years ago was appreciated by many Palestinians.

Peter is such a thoughtful, genuine person. He is so upfront about his own failings, both past and present, and doesn't present himself to be the utmost expert on things. His model of Jewish faith is inspiring to me. Sure, people have had criticisms of him and his remarks but I believe he welcomes them. His Judaism is the Judaism my grandparents passed down to me.

This was a great interview and warmed me up to him and maybe getting his book - I decided not to buy it after his TDS appearance because it smelled too 2SS/Lib Zio to me initially (in spite of the fact that I've hoarded basically every antizionist book that came on my radar over the last two years and I have a shelf with over twenty of them I still haven't opened) but I might reconsider in light of this interview, or I might buy it as a gift for someone I think it will speak to. But that being said I really wish you guys talked about the current "peace" deal on the table right now that Bibi and Trump are actually signalling will succeed rather than sabotaging it like they usually do. I'm so anxious about the possibility there's a catch around the corner, and I'm super suspicious that it would mean this particular genocidal campaign would in some ways close (even if the following chapter is dark in other ways) at basically exactly the two-year mark. It just sounds too good to be true and makes me feel a teeny bit out of my mind in a way that you guys are often able to ground me by articulating some of these thoughts and feelings so insightfully.

Really disappointed you offered Peter so little pushback as he dehumanized Palestinians. He COMPLETELY centers Jews - not in just offering an authentic perspective which is honest - but as if genocide is primarily an “embarrassment” for the Jewish people.

And the title of his book is so offensive … is he profiting off of genocide? Not it man.

Please talk about this Bibi Trump deal.

I remember Beinart well from the 90s through the mid 2000s. I found him utterly repellent because of his staunch Zionism and support for the Iraq war. It is a very pleasant surprise to witness his evolution. Congratulations and thanks to Peter for devoting so much energy to undoing his past harms.

I knew Beinart was going to be polarizing, but I kinda liked his book, mainly because it gave me insight into the Zionist perspective and gave some good rebuttals to Zionist talking points. Yes, the book’s title will turn some people off. So will his Jewish-centric perspective. But I think he plays an important role in turning liberal Zionists and observant Jews away from Zionism. That’s who the book is for. He’s not for everyone, but I find it refreshing to hear his perspective because his critique of Zionism comes from a pretty moderate liberal position and is so reasonable that it’s very hard to argue against.

Peter is a very powerful and useful voice for Palestine liberation. I understand that some people complain because he is "centering Jews" but let us not forget that everyone plays the role that they can, and Peter is trying to move the needle in his own community which is still the bedrock of the Zionist project. Him and people like him are complementary to all the other fights we are fighting in solidarity with Palestinians.

I got a lot out of this interview but I question his claim that the only way out of this is to change the minds of the people doing it—he says this explicitly and refers to this historically as the only strategy that works. Is that true? I can see this being a PART of a strategy, but historically, appealing to the better instincts of the perpetrators seems like a losing game, since the ones doing evil things are often all too willing to double down rather than change their ways. Sure, as he says, I know plenty of people who have great politics but are shitty and mean on an interpersonal level and vice versa, but we’re talking about an exterminationist world view here—pretty hard to get past that.
