Matt and Daniel are joined by the author of the forthcoming book ‘Here Where We Live Is Our Country,’ Molly Crabapple. They talk through the Jewish Labor Bund, its role in anti-zionism, and then finish with a country anthem ably performed by a server array running so hot you could flash sear a New York Strip on the chassis.

Daniel's missed opportunity to talk about the surprisingly good Israeli funk band The Apples

all-time great episode. Just splendid. i'm going to buy a box of HWWLIOC and hand them out like flyers.

also, the passage Daniel read around 1:07:20 is a hell of a piece of prose and gave me eidetic flashbacks. Ouch indeed!

Pleeeease go listen to the episode of the Dollop about Johnny Appleseed! Not only was he real, he’s less problematic than you’d expect from the time. (Also any episode of the dollop, esp 20th century politicians and any union-centric topics)

Need to transcribe that quote from about 38 minutes about Zionism

Fun fact: that Jewish joke Matt alluded to is alive and well in Harbin, China. The town only has one Jew living in it, an Israeli born Professor, Ben Canaan, who is a Chinese citizen, there are two preserved synagogues in town, and he loves one and hates the other.

Thanks so much for continuing the chat about the Bund - it's absolutely fascinating. She is brilliant in every sense.

I'm an Armenian Jew and seeing how both these communities processed their trauma is very enlightening. It actually inoculated me against becoming a zionist, because I saw how Zionists refuse to heal from trauma. Armenians in Armenia are some of the kindest, most generous and gentle people. Israelis in Israel are some of the rudest, most racist, selfish and hateful people I've ever met. Generalisations of course, but they are broadly true. And yes, as an Armenian a lot of Zionists really don't like me, because they consider the Armenian genocide to be a distraction from the one true genocide.

Hi Bad Hasbara. First off, I loved this interview. I heard Molly interviewed a few different places and your interview was the best one. This comment is for Daniel. At some point your dad wondered why people like Exodus and recommended a book called The Wall about the Warsaw Ghetto. I ordered the book and read it. He was not wrong - it was very good. Then I read Here Where We Live is our Country and realized I was readjng many of the same stories fictionalized in The Wall.
