what a great choice of movie for the holidays! i first watched this film when i was in primary school, and though i liked it, i was much more of a princess mononoke sort of kid... it's only older that i really got the appeal of whimsical and meandering films like this. i got emotional and cried rewatching it with you guys too so its not just you sarah!!

Studio Ghibli never misses!! This was such a treat guys! I'd been meaning to rewatch it forever n I'm glad i got to do it with you guys ❤️ Some tidbits : According to IMDB, Satsuki is 10 and Mei is 4, and it seems like their mom is hospitalized for tuberculosis as she appears to be in a sanatorium which is specialized for TB patients.

Shazia Khan

For a little more context: satsuki and mei's mother is being treated at a sanatorium, and it's implied that she's recovering from tuberculosis. Miyakazi (the director) has mentioned that when he was a child he often visited his mother while she was being hospitalized for TB, and this memory translated into the fllm

Studio Ghibli really knows how to animate children’s movements and mannerisms. Mei looks and sounds so realistic

Hayao Miyazaki captures humanity better than most films that rely on cameras and real actors.

Miyazaki has said this film is semi-autobiographical. He chose to make the main characters girls because it would be too painful to make them boys. Another beautiful story that blurs the lines between reality and imagination in favor of the belief that children live somewhere between the two worlds. If you ever feel like revisiting this one, I highly recommend watching the English dub. It’s my favorite dub of any movie or show ever! For your next Ghibli: Kiki’s Delivery Service and Ponyo are also super wholesome and sweet! Castle in the Sky is an overrated gem. Also very sweet, but more intense. And if you’re looking to venture into the “more intense than sweet” territory, Princesses Mononoke is the way to go! Thanks for the Christmas gift!!!

Late for the party. I just noticed that this one is not cropped. Can we do that to all penthouse videos?
