They still need to see and know the face of the person. Name only wont do.

Papa Yagami's story is so beautifully tragic. The very antithesis of Light himself. Always following the law, always following order, wouldn't use guns when he wasn't a cop, wouldn't kill. 100% pure dude. So what the HELL happened to Light lol

Sarah

I wasn't sure if Light's dad never mentioned Mello's name. I don't think we saw him actually say it

Sarah

Yes!!! Mr. Yagami was such a good soul. This was heartbreaking!!

slowchem

Light and Misa can't kill Mello even Dad did mention his real name through their walkie talkies. Death Note will only work if the user sees/knows the real face so Mello is still immune of being killed if he cover his face or his only photo (Near's possession) never leaks. not sure if the mispronunciation is deliberate or it's just hard lmao, this might help to easily memorize it shi ni = Death (shi ne = Die!) ga mi = Paper (ka mi = God) oh, ori means fold so you guys can just replace the ori in origami

riddle

I've seen Death Note several times but haven't gotten around to reading the manga yet, so if this is answered in the manga without spoiling future episodes for S&A please let me know. But something that has always extremely confused me with every rewatch is the Task Force working with Kira to retrieve the other notebook. It is so confusing to me because why would the Task Force work with one of the main people they are trying to catch? Like, okay. The "real" Kira doesn't want the Death Note to be used by the mafia because they might have bad intentions, I guess. But even if this helps the Task Force retrieve the second notebook, I don't know why Kira would allow his own notebook to be given to the police that are supposed to be catching him. Wouldn't he need it back to continue killing? (I know Misa has a notebook and Light is the real Kira, but the Task Force doesn't know this). Also, wouldn't the Task Force try to run DNA tests on the original notebook to try to find the identity of the original Kira after they're done with this mission? They were able to identify Misa through the tapes that she sent to Sakura TV, so how were they not able to identify Light through DNA testing as well? There's no way he could have gotten his and Misa's fingerprints off the notebook. And I don't see why they wouldn't have used this as an opportunity to identify the person they've been chasing after for several years. Unless I'm completely missing something obvious.

Sarah

No, at this point, the mispronunciation is on purpose because Adam messed it up so badly so many times.

Sarah

You bring up some very interesting points! Anyone have any answers for us??

I'm pretty sure that the sketches don't count and both Mello and Near rely on their reclusivity to protect themselves. There doesn't exist a photograph of either of them nor any records of their real names, so the only way to kill them with the note is by meeting them, otherwise Light wouldn't have made such a big deal about forcing his dad's hand.

Vu D

Some of your objections are legitimate, and I think the story tries to walk the fine line between intelligence and magic, and it doesn't do as good a job with these details. As for the Kira Task Force's motivation, the goal was never to identify the original Kira and put him to justice, at least not exclusively. They were motivated to stop the killing on moral principles from the beginning, so it doesn't matter who has the notebook, the concept and threat of Kira is what they fight. This was consistent with when Higuchi became the scapegoat Kira. From a policeman perspective, this makes sense as well. L had an obsession with Light Yagami, but a police in general holds no special regard for the man holding the book, but the unchecked power over life and death itself.

Let's put ourselves into the mind of a Task Force member. They don't want Mello to possess the Death Note any more than they want Kira to. In some ways, you can even argue that Mello is a worse note owner because he had already shown not just an affinity for organized violence, but demonstrated experience and talent for it. The note would give him a monopoly on violence in this entire world, which when put to service via his organized crime network is definitely not going towards building a world you'd have the luxury of debating over. Regardless of what they plan for Kira, Mello is the current priority, and in front of them is a verifiable plan of action that has a high chance of success. There's really no mystery why they would pursue it.

riddle

Yeah, I had no arguments about the Task Force using original Kira's notebook to catch Mello, I know that's the current priority. I didn't find anything wrong when they were trying to catch Higuchi either. I did say why wouldn't they do forensics /after/ this mission (which you already answered). Sorry if I was unclear; I tend to just comment my thoughts as they come to me without proofreading for clarity. My main question though wasn't so much about them agreeing to Kira's offer to help them, as a member of the police I would be relieved if I had a sure way to retrieve the other notebook. But my question was more about why they wouldn't find the whole thing suspicious and why they wouldnt question original Kira for giving the book to them. Like it just feels too convenient and I would have suspected Light right away as being the person lending the Task Force the book given his history of being a suspect and the police being cornered and not having a way to retrieve Mello's book. Unless I misunderstood and original Kira would have that book back. Because how would original Kira continue to kill? Or would he just rely on second Kira (Misa) to continue killing in a way that follows his morals? Thank you for your responses by the way.
