I would say that L figured out that Light was Kira pretty fast as well. However, the only thing is that he never had any physical proof to convict Light and Misa, which is why the investigation dragged along as much as it did. The first time L was finally on his way to obtaining evidence that might be able to convict Light and Misa, he was killed by Rem who would prevent that from happening to save Misa.

There were originally four death notes (three that would become usable by humans), but now there are only three death notes (two usable by humans). Sidoh's notebook - This is the notebook that Ryuk stole and Light picked up when he was in high school. This was Light's notebook for the majority of the story. This notebook was taken by Mello when they kidnapped Sayu and Mr. Yagami gave it to them. After the Japanese Task Force raided them, the notebook was returned to Sidoh and he took it back to the Shinigami world. This notebook is no longer on Earth. Gelus' notebook - This is the notebook that Rem gifted to Misa. This is the one that she uses for the majority of the story. Light used it a few times as well. This notebook is the one that was sent to Mikami. Rem's notebook - After Rem dies, Light takes ownership of this notebook. This is the one that he sends to the Japanese Task force as "Kira" in order to help retrieve Sidoh's notebook from Mello. This one is under the Japanese Task Force's possesion. Ryuk's notebook - This is just Ryuk's notebook. It is never given to any human at any point in the story as part of the Shinigami rules, so Ryuk has it. TLDR: Right now the only notebooks that humans are in possession of are Gelus's notebook which Mikami has, and Rem's notebook which the Japanese task force has.

So keep in mind that part of Light's plan to recover the death note from Mello involved having "Kira" send the Japanese Task Force Gelus' old death note so that they could make use of Ryuk trading for the shinigami eyes. This meant that after Sidoh took his original notebook back to the shinigami realm, only two notebooks remained in the hands of humans, one with Kira and one with the Japanese Task Force. Right now Kira's only notebook is in Mikami's hands. The other notebook is presumably locked up by the task force.
