Nice catch on Grice Sarah! Also, we're starting to see some cognitive dissonance in this episode, which understandably left you confused. Particularly Reiner explaining the people and situations from Paradis to his family - as examples to showcase they are devils. These people are beyond brainwashed, firmly believing the people from paradis being evil when they have no reason to show for it. And then you see Reiner, in the middle of the two sides. He actually saw how normal people are over there, but he grew up in Marley as a warrior, with all the brainwashing that came with it.

Pretty sure Reiner gave weird examples in the dinner scene to show that the Paradis Eldians weren't bad people. He was also kinda pointing out how ridiculous his family's brainwashed beliefs were, but of course they wouldn't listen. It's like playing along with a flat-earther when really you're making fun of them

The Eldians do know about other nations now because Grishas journals containing the information we saw in his backstory talked about the outside world and they relayed that info to the public at the end of s3 and that was 4 years ago now.

Platypus = Cart titan xD

I don't think he's intentionally trying to tell them that the people in Paradis are just regular people and not devils. His mind is still kinda messed up so while trying to "describe the devils" he just described some regular people. His head is trying to convince himself that they are evil while deep down he knows that they are not and his mouth just ended up doing both lol.

There is something I’d like to share with you: Attack on Titan is a work so rich in detail that we miss a lot of things the first time we watch it; details explained in the first season can remain relevant all the way into the fourth. There are things I barely noticed even after watching it three times, and I found guides, detailed videos highlighting overlooked details, the manga, and author notes—among other resources—to be very helpful. Reiner is a prime example of this; he is such a complex character because this episode reveals a deeply complicated side of him—the contrast between what he was taught and what he discovered while on the Island. While he had been taught to hate the people of the Island, upon arriving there, he discovered they were just like him: people who experienced happiness, tears, and dreams, just like anyone else. Reiner is broken—not just by the war, but because he was torn between two worlds simultaneously. It was a constant struggle between what he believed (that the Island was full of devils) and the reality he experienced there (that they were people just like him). His mind tried to cope with this duality, and he began to psychologically split his identities in order to survive. Another detail not explained in the anime is that the "potato incident" wasn't a source of trauma for him; for Reiner, it was actually a funny memory—so much so that he had to cover his mouth to keep anyone from seeing him smile.
