PEW PEW AHHH! YOU'RE NOT AUTHORIZED IN THIS PEWPEW GAH!!! 

We'll be going back to bad games soon enough I think. For now, because of the increasing Star Wars hype, and because we've avoided the topic for long enough on this channel - STAR WARS: DARK FORCES, one of the mightiest contributions from extended universe, starring certified BAD MOTHERFUCKER Kyle Katarn, pre-beard, pre-force powers, still a stone-cold stormtrooper killer. Even in DOSBox without vertical mouse aim this game is still a blast. Don't play the version on Playstation though, it sucks. 

This was actually a really fun video to make. I'm satisfied with the final product, which is something I can rarely say about any video, so that means it's probably trash. I still wish there was a complete source port so I could record in HD or widescreen. Oh, well. 

I wasted nearly an entire day of editing working on an intro that got almost completely tossed out because it was too much reading, which is why I'm posting it here after the fact. There was a fancy Star Wars-style crawl that lasted over a minute, which is criminal, and it wasn't funny enough to keep.

As for the Steamboat Wendigo that replaced it...

Let's never mention it again and hope it leaves us alone.

"I still wish there was a complete source port" Friend of mine was involved briefly with the DarkXL port, before the creator started going crazy with scope creep and started making DaggerXL, OutlawsXL, and briefly DoomXL (before being destroyed by the doom community with a general response of "oh god dammit, not another one"), naturally none of them ever getting finished as far as I know edit: Actually thinking more about it he was involved with DaggerXL, after the scope creep had already started. Still though.

Oh my god, you did Dark Forces, thank you! I remember having this game as a kid. I remember I thought it was okay, but a bit repetitive. I don't think I ever finished it, because I don't remember the kell dragon bit. Also, I was always real scared of them monsters in the brown goop, probably because they scared me in the movie, because they didn't seem that bad in the game. Another great episode, sir. And that list of patrons is getting really impressive!

So glad you're gotten to this game. This was my first foray into FPS (that and a weird game called "Sensory Overload") Never got Doom until later. Hoping to see the rest of the Dark Forces games soon.

I still haven't seen any of the new Star Wars. When I heard Disney bought the IP I knew they were going to beat the franchise into the dirt. Disney aren't the mom and pop shop they once were, they're practically the EA of the movie industry. I am actually happy I did avoid them from the bits I've heard. It makes it very easy to ignore their existence. :P

I played this game around the time Civvie teased it in the Blood: Cryptic Passage episode so I could be prepared for this video... and it was totally worth it.

I played the first level demo so many times back in the day but never really dug into the main game. Lack of source port holds me back as I've been spoiled by how good old games look with new ports.

A great thing about your videos is learning about these 90s FPS games I've never heard of despite growing up during the decade, never heard of Dark Forces before you mentioned it. I like the cutscenes especially because they're extremely PnC adventure game-y which makes sense considering.

Played through this game when I was young on a 486, I hated the Blood Moon mission. It scared the piss out of me because I thought the Phase 1 Dark Troopers were scary... ...They're still kind of unnerving honestly...

I'm so glad you noticed and mentioned the art direction in DF; it's one of the main appeals the original movie had. (Yup, I'm one of the old fucks that stood in line to see it in '77.) During my playthrough of DF on it's initial release (I had the demo, too, which you had to create a custom boot config file just to run) I found myself amazed and gratified that the designers had gone to such pains to replicate the feel of the Star Wars environments; it made the world so much more immersive than it would otherwise have been. You've got a good eye, sir!
