After a nice little vacation, I'm kicking off 2024 with the most de-listed Wolfenstein game ever made. You can find the tiny file for the 42-year-old Apple II Castle Wolfenstein games in the same category of abandonware as this 14-year-old Raven title. Back when Raven was keeping id Software IPs alive while id was busy working on RAGE for a daunting 7 years. And now that I think about it RAGE and Wolfenstein 2009 have a lot in common - a somewhat truncated "open world" connected to linear levels, really good guns, high production values......Wolf 2009 has more than one boss battle and upon reflection I think is a better game?! What am I saying?Happy New Year,

I debated whether or not to keep it going and it felt like I should since I was cutting out some of the cutscene in order to comment. All in all, it's at least closer to the correct "find out" timing.

I really tried to get something out of this game. Raven are pros. They've made a bunch of genuinely classic, well-made games. But I stopped playing after a couple of hours. It isn't bad at all, but it's from THAT time in FPSs where mediocrity and corporatism had gutted creativity from the genre. If BJ wasn't so SLOOOOOOWWWW it would be better. Better than Rage, for sure. But still painful and kinda depressing coming after RTCW.

I played the heck out of this when it came out, it was a rather refreshing break from all the WWII shooters at the time and mixed things up a bit with the supernatural powers. Always found Golden Dawn a bit funny, since there's a full-on neo-Nazi party with the same name in Greece.

Whenever Civvie reviews an out-of-print game I check gg deals to see if there are any Steam keys floating around. I managed to get Prey (2006) and Manhattan Project for a few bucks this way. Anyway, there is a Steam gift of Wolf09 listed for €9999 (with fees more like 10500).

Great review, Civvie. But I think you were playing with some sort of weird mod that gave them all human heads. You missed out on some really great headshot animations with this mod active, since in the default game headshots give you this really satisfying spray of orange.

Amazing review, I remember playing it back then and loving the hell out of it, though the "open world" sections kinda tired me. I still remember fondly that moment when I was sneaking and I threw a rock at the first nazi wizard interrupting their cultist stuff and laughing so much god i need to play this game again

Great video, Civvie and Katie! Also sorta forgot about this game, but felt quite nostalgic. Mentioning Disco Elysium in it makes me wonder, wil you do a review on that too?

Also, honestly I think this is one of your best episodes Civvie. Some of the best lines and sketches I've seen recently, really had a laugh when I needed that (that bit with blood on the screen instead of a health bar was golden). Cheers, keep it up Civvie!
