Today's exercise is all about downstroke picking speed: an essential rhythm guitar skill. The exercise is based on a simple progression using power chords, but feel free to adapt the exercise using other chord patterns if you wish.

Tab is below. Have fun. Speak tomorrow!

My dreams of playing in a Ramones covers band have been reignited! 😎

Charles Cluck

This feels like actual exercise. Ten minutes and my left thumb and right forearm are feeling the burn. Power chords and barre chords just don’t figure much in what I play, so this is an out-of-the-box thing for me. I’ll benefit from it though, I’m sure.

NB

Yes - I have to say I really don't gravitate to this type of playing naturally so will likely benefit very much from this workout!!

Drew Holmes

punk technique- love it ( just watched a great documentary on East bay Punks called " Turn it Around")

Jordan Zimmerman

I’ve been listening to The Who Live At Leeds a lot lately… Townsend’s rhythm parts are so good! Wouldn’t mind a lesson on his style some time Thanks again for the inspiration!

Frank Meyers

Check out Cure Forest lesson. Thanks Adrian.

what stool are you using / would you recommend?

Jack Markin

Picking sort of fast, not so bad, but muting 1+,2+,3+ and then not on 4 is more difficult. I realize that it is probably a matter of starting slow and working up speed, so Hi Ho and then "...only 24 hours to go..."

Peter Healy

Hi Adrian well the Day 6 is a challenge for my old hands. I've listen/ed to a lot of "Punk" style guitar and play that "style" as part of my sound. I'm not a fan of Metal apart from a couple of early Black Sabbath numbers. To this point I work on my fast downstroke picking, but I deliberately avoid any type of muted strumming sound. So this goes against the grain but I can see how using it in an exercise like this will really help. Cheers Pete

This exercise brings to mind The Cars, Just what I needed, and a coupe of others ...

In an earlier post I think Adrian said he uses ‘Metronome Pro’.

anyonecanplayguitar

It's a Roc n Soc drum stool. I initially got it for drumming, but ended up using it in my videos -it looks good and is very comfortable.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, that's right Metronome Pro or Pro Metronome. I'm sure there are loads of decent metronome apps out there, but this one has a nice satisfying click sound and lots of advanced functions should you need them. I also like hardware metronomes - got a Boss, Korg and an old school wind up one.

Ian Edwards

This was fun. Thank you. When I first looked at it, I thought it would be easy but turns out not and I was just being really sloppy. Once I got it under the fingers properly and gradually increased the metronome tempo it was sounding and feeling really tight in a way that playing like this hasn’t before. Who knew that practice was worthwhile eh?

Robert Bachmeier

This was something that I had to really work on when learning Babylon's Burning, a lesson you gave a while back. It can be very tiring especially at higher speeds and using 8th notes. A speed of 170 suddenly turns into 340 notes per minute, almost 6 notes per second, palm muting some and letting some ring out. It's been difficult to keep my picking hand relaxed throughout. I'm not perfect at it but proud of my progress. This lesson will be one I'll incorporate into my practice.

Steve Crockett

I love power chords but I need some advice people. Up to this point it's just been clean strat sounds but what pedal(s) and what adjustments would I make to my amp to get that grungy, distortion sound in this lesson? I'm early intermediate and really have done no research and know very little about getting these awesome sounds. Thanks for any advice :)

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Steve. Depends on your amp. If there's a gain control try Turing that up. Or you may have different modes or amp models that you can switch too to give you more of an overdrive tone. Have fun and experiment!

Steve Crockett

Thanks Adrian. My only amp right now is the DV Mark Little Jazz so it might not have the sauce to overdrive since it's solid state? I'll give it a shot and do some reading online as well as experiment :) Thanks for your response!

thank you. i got one as well (but with a backrest)
