A fingerstyle exercise for you today. We're arpeggiating a simple chord shape and moving it up and down the fretboard. This one works equally well on acoustic guitar. Tab can be found below.

Still here 🥴 I can already feel the improvement and I'll continue to use the exercises after the 30 days. I'm writing all the exercises down in my notebook to build warm up and practice sessions around them to continue after the 30 days.

Georgina Hill

I’m still here. I’ve found these practice sessions very motivating. Thanks for the hard work Adrian.

Charles Cluck

I’ve got some work to do. My banjo habits don’t include picking with the ring finger, so I have to really think about these moves.

NB

I tend to do hybrid picking a bit more than complete finger picking sans pick so will certainly be using this exercise - thanks Adrian!

Today's thought - re the exercise about memorizing the fingerboard - which is part of my daily practice routine as I can do it when I'm out and about and not just with guitar in my hands. It interests me that when memorizing the notes fret by fret there are certain frets that I find much more difficult to remember than others. When one thinks about it, none of the notes across any of the frets seem completely random, but some seem much less logical and much more of a jumble than others. The notes across the 5th fret and 10th fret for example seem so much more ordered than the notes across the 9th fret, which I first identified as being tricky, although I now identify the 8th fret as the most random seeming and the 6th fret as also being tricky unless one triangulates from the 5th fret, which isn't really learning the notes off the bat. I find the 11th and 4th fret a bit harder too. Just thought I'd share this thought in case it's helpful to anyone else. You are not alone if it is taking a while to get it down. With a few minutes of daily practice the blanks get filled in. I'm much much better than I was 2 weeks ago.

Still here too - the arpeggio exercises are harder than they first appear

Fingerstyle. My nemesis. I bought an acoustic just because I love the deep acoustic sound, but I don't spend much time with it. I do a little strumming but that's it. This is one I will work on just to have a little fingerstyle developing.

Iain G

Great test of intonation!

Mickey C

I'm a two-finger banjo player (when I'm not clawhammering), so I haven't used my ring finger in years! Seems to work okay by double-thumbing the lower strings.

First time trying finger style picking, well see how this goes.

Lawrence Hobbis

Are any of the other strings part of the full D add4, F add 9 and G chords, Adrian? Only the G sounds right when I play the four middle strings because the open G is (duh!!) in the G chord, and the D sounds all right if I mute the open G.

Sam Hussain

I'm finding the open G string seems to dominate and spoil the sound of the exercise. Would that be a set up issue or should i pick it more gently?

Jim Parker

I really struggle with thumb independence in finger picking. Inevitably my fingers will do the same thing and I can’t seem to separate them. It’s like trying to rub your stomach and pat your head at the same time. I think it’s because I’ve always played with a pick. Any lesson on learning thumb independence would be welcome
