Hi all!

The new video is up and this one is about adding fills, connections and melodic ideas to a simple chord progression in the soul style, all loosely inspired by the playing of Cropper, Hendrix and Mayfield.

It's a subject I find myself returning to from time to time as there's always more to explore. I work through four choruses based around the 1-4-5 chords in the key of A, with each time through introducing new ideas - major pentatonic fills, double stops, sixths, spread triads and more. Tab and a backing track are below.

I'm off to Italy in the morning for the first of this year's guitar workshops which I'm massively looking forward to. It's going to be great to take a little break from the computer screen and do some in-person teaching and playing for a change. I have, however, filmed some extra content in advance, so look out for that in a week or so's time.

Hope you enjoy the video; any questions just let me know in the comments.

Bring Simple Chord Progressions to Life — Cropper, Hendrix & Mayfield-Inspired Soul Rhythm Guitar

In this video I work through a simple 1-4-5 based chord progression in A, building it up over four choruses with fills, connections and melodic ideas in the soul style - loosely inspired by the playing of Steve Cropper, Jimi Hendrix and Curtis Mayfield. Each chorus introduces new ideas: major pentatonic fills, double stops, sixths, spread triads and more, all designed to show how you can take a simple chord progression and make it more musical and expressive. Excellent video. So many ideas. Thanks for playing the chord progression. I will use it to practice with a looper...slowly.

Loving this lesson, I'm trying to pick a progression a week to really nail a nice selection of them in my inner library, combining these type of exercises into that keeps it entertaining

Bon Voyage. Look forward to some Fellini inspired sound track video upon your return! Ciao

Thank you for this. It’s my favourite lesson to date. It brings together so many aspects I need to work on in a lovely tune that I really want to play well.
