Morning all. In today's video I'm looking at the song West Germany by the influential 80s punk band Minutemen. If you're unfamiliar with the band I recommend taking a listen to their epic 1984 album Double Nickels on the Dime.

West Germany is a fairly simple song - just 2 riffs. But I have to say I found it quite challenging to get it up to speed and sounding convincing. Hope you enjoy learning it. Link + music/tab can be found below. I've written in full down-up picking indications as I thought that might be helpful with this one. You don't have to do it exactly this way, but it works for me.

Speak next week,

Adrian

West Germany by Minutemen | Guitar Lesson

A quick lesson on how to play the great West Germany by Minutemen. I found this a lot harder to play up to speed than I thought I would. Makes you appreciate what a great player D Boon was. Adrian! I can comment on this one before I even watch it. You've inspired me to dust off my old Vinyl copy of Double Nickels on the Dime. I grew up in the Los Angeles area and saw the Minutemen live a couple of times, great scene back in those days!! If I am not mistaken you spent some time 'round those parts at the Guitar Institute or some such? ....I digress, keep the superb content comin'!

Wow, how great to have had chance to see them live! It was a legendary scene that I only know from books and the Minutemen film We Jam Econo - which is very good. I was in LA for a year, a long time ago now - I was a nervous teenager and it was a pretty min blowing experience. I've not been back since sadly.

We took it for granted at the time and only in retrospect do I realize how lucky I was to have had access to all the live music that Southern California had/has to offer. -- Am I missing something or did you forget to include a link to the video? ;) I see the gp and pdf files but no link to YouTube

Hi Adrian - I heard you say your thinking of doing another Minutemen tune if you do please consider “The Roar of the Masses Could Be Farts” . It’s an amazing little ditty also it’s so topical of our times. I also have been looking at your lessons for a minute now and you have really helped me in a very big way and I just really appreciate you for doing this! Thanks again!

Hi Jack. Yes, I will look at another Minutemen song or two, probably not immediately, but later this year. Roar of the Masses...is great, so I'll put that up for consideration. Pleased you've been enjoying the lessons!

You know when I first found your video's I got so excited and do you know what I did? This might sound weird, but I messaged Mike Watt about it. This was about 10 days ago. Anyway, you know what I've always wanted to know how to play? That wonky arse guitar solo from The Voidoids Kid With The Replaceable Head. Good phrasing challenge.

Love this video. It made me decide to become a patreon today. Thank you.

Thanks Pierre. Great to have you on board here! Hope you continue to enjoy the videos.

Haha I wonder what Mike Watt would make of people on YouTube doing nerdy breakdowns of his songs! Yes, more classic Quine on Kid with the Replaceable Head! Very tricky to play it exactly like he does, but I might have a go...

I was completely unaware of Minutemen before this. I see that some folks were very excited to see a Minutemen lesson, and great to have my horizons once again broadened. I just listened to Double Nickels on the Dime today; that's quite an album!
