Morning all! In this week's video I'm talking about how to get started playing with other people. The subject of this video was actually suggested by one of you patrons a little while back (I love requests, suggestions for future videos - keep them coming!) and I think it's something that many bedroom players wonder about.

This will primarily be of interest to players at the beginner end of the spectrum, but if you're a more advanced player who has yet to play with others, there should also be some stuff of interest here.

Here's a link to the video: https://youtu.be/R03cqTqh_nU

No tabs this week as it's mostly a talky, ideas-based video.

Hope you all have a great week. I'm working on more #content for you today! Thinking about looking at a bit of surf music soon. Ideas? What's you're favourite surf or surf-inspired track?

Speak next week,

Adrian

How about Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet - Having an Average Weekend - I think of it as Surf Inspired.

My Burnt Coffee

Good lesson Adrian. I just listened to the Shadowy Men song suggested by Chris (above) its really good. I have a couple suggestions, but they're not gonna be as well known. "Surf Nouveau" by The Aqua Velvets, or "Black Sweater Massacre" by The Reigning Monarchs. The Reigning Monarchs song is 2:00 long and pretty punk.

Rino Dattilo

"so you can play with other human beings" - what a great line Adrian! I lead the worship at church, and it really is different as I am basically the acoustic guy. But I learned a lot here thank you!

Joel Camp

My vote, Hawaii 5 O by the Ventures, thx.

Brian Scott

More sage advice Adrian, I needed this exact "talking to" [laugh!] Also, really having fun with "the Happy-Go-Lucky Guitar", Cheers!

Jeff Sims

I'll second this. You could do a similar thing to what you did with Pipeline.... Hawaii 5 - 0 by the Ventures / Aloha Steve and Dano by Radio Birdman.

Jeff Sims

Excellent advice Adrian. I'm fast running out of excuses. One of the best things I got was a Ditto looping pedal. Not only did I hear how I really sounded, I could hear how much I sped up and slowed down as I attempted to play along with myself (stop sniggering). A rude shock to start, but I'm sure I am better for it.

Jeff Sims

Why did you have to ask for surf song requests? My brain has just gone into overload! Watch this space....

In no particular order: Flash of Green – Pollo del Mar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc-KjjVxqUo Bombora – The Atlatics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmMeqid_fmU Spectre Detector – The Tiki Tones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQZR91H6ajU Rescue at Mavericks – The Torquays https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDEWXP_VOh4 Overdrawn at Cortes Bank – The Torquays https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDEWXP_VOh4 El Borracho – The Eliminators https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nYthnQOD8M I’ve tried to include a cross section, some sound harder than others, some have trem picking, some have some good whammy work, but they all have the ‘verb! I know you’ll come up with something epic, anyway.

David Pollock

I would check out MIke Campbell’s group blue stingrays. My fave is ju ju beads

Jeff Sims

Reef Break by The Atlantics is awesome, but it sounds pretty advanced...

Chris Kueny

I got a Ditto long ago, but have never stuck with learning to use it properly. I shall try to buckle down and do it.

Jeff Sims

Hi Chris, they are low tech, so you have to get the start and finish at exactly the right time but it is just a matter of playing around with it. My favourites for the looper, from Adrian, are the Richard Hell / Television songs.

Yes, loopers are such good practice tools. Besides being great to create backing tracks to solo over, they're great for developing rhythm skills and just recording yourself and listening back. They do take a bit of getting used to in the beginning - you need to hit record and stop at exactly the right moment or you end up with a wonky sounding loop. But worth taking the time to learn to use it properly.

Thanks for the tip David - had no idea Mike Campbell had a surf band on the side. Really great stuff!

Marcelo Magalhães

Great suggestion! Last year I went for a Yo la Tengo concert and Shadowy Men was the opening band, amazing guitar amazing band.
