Hello patrons! As promised, this week I have some surf for you. This is a true classic of the genre from Australian band The Atlantics. There's a full tutorial, and I also discuss surf gear and tones towards the end of the video. Hope you enjoy playing this one as much as I do.

Here's the link: https://youtu.be/jxsHNUwivpw

Usual tab and Guitar Pro files can be found below. (For those of you who aren't familiar with Guitar Pro, it's a bit of software for writing and playing back music and tab. You can listen to the piece, change the speed, check rhythms and  isolate tricky bits. Can be a useful practice tool, but the tab itself is the same as the PDF.)

On the backing track the structure is exactly as on the original recording. (Incidentally, the acoustic rhythm parts were really hard to record - very fast 16th notes for 3 minutes. Killed my strumming arm/hand! Obviously I need to work on my strumming stamina.)

Have a good week; speak next Friday,

Adrian

I'm not especially a surf follower (most of my exposure is through you), but this was a killer track! I hope to try it someday although a bit scared of it now. (Your tremolo picking lesson is a good foundation.) I am however doggedly throwing myself against your "Christmastime Is Here" lesson whose fifth anniversary I see will be this Dec. 1. On my first attempt long ago I gave up after about the second chord. Now I have at least played each chord, although the really stretchy ones only occasionally getting them right (this is good material for making your barres right), and my changes are still infinitely slow, but it's a satisfying endeavor and progress is happening. Thank you for this year of fabulous lessons! It's hard to tell you how much they mean. On a recent one I was struck by how spoiled we've gotten by how clear and systematic and well-organized your instruction is. No one else beats it.

(BTW, I haven't been working on "Christmastime is Here" for its full five years! I've been playing guitar for much less than that!)

Hey Chris, The important thing is to keep picking up the guitar and set realistic expectations. I don't know much about guitar playing, but I know its important to persevere. The most important part of perseverance is to recognise your victories (in terms of what they mean to you, don't compare yourself to others) and celebrate them.

Jeff Sims

Thanks for the Atlantics lesson. Your video brings out the 'sinister' tones that I didn't pick up so easily in the original. Pretty sophisticated stuff for a bunch of blokes in a cultural backwater like Sydney in the early 60's (it's OK, I'm an Aussie). I should have known when Adrian was looking for surf music suggestions that he would just use it as an excuse to showcase another one of his magnificent guitars. Fantastic surf sound, too! You have a calling Adrian, you must take up the mantle of the surf guitar and carry the message into the broader guitar playing world!

If anyone is interested in more of The Atlantics, Reef Break is another masterpiece of the genre.

Thanks Jeff--yes, I'm actually pretty much at peace with the process! There's a level of frustration sometimes, but I don't think it's excessive, and I've been at it long enough to know that I can make progress according to what I put into it. I've worked at learning some other challenging stuff and I know there will be days where we feel like we're accomplishing nothing, but that there will be other days were we see the progress. I went back and listened recently to Adrian's 2019 New Year's video on practicing, lots of good advice there.

Thanks for the kind words Chris. Good to be appreciated! Nice that my older lessons are still getting some love. That kind of jazzy chord melody is one of the hardest styles there is. As Jeff said, perseverance is the key. And just enjoying the process is important. A really test of technique and chord knowledge. I'm toying with the idea of doing something along quite similar lines for this year's Christmas special.

Yes, I did consider doing Reef Break. Another awesome track. Might save that one until next year as I'd like to keep doing some surf every so often. Such a fun and satisfying style of music to play and teach.

“Chord knowledge” needed to compose that one, but I’m just taking your word for a chord being A#m7(b5), etc. But that’s good for now. I’m gradually getting these down, and sometime down the road will better understand why these notes are used. For sure, enjoying the process.
