This week, a beautiful surf instrumental that was new to me until fairly recently. It's part of the soundtrack to a 1966 surf film (which I still need to watch...)

Really fun to play, and not too hard.

Here's the link (recorded a couple of weeks ago, hence the return to my lockdown hair-do): https://youtu.be/IE-ctpnGthU

The tab can be found below. Backing track to follow shortly.

Have fun and speak next week,

Adrian

Wow, I never would have though of suggesting this, but what a great lesson. It kicked of a long train of thought, but where it ended was with another suggestion: There is a tune called Northern Winds, written by Norman Blake. I had always though it was a Steve Earle tune, but it turns out Steve Earle put it on one of his own albums, played by Norman Blake (credited). Anyway, it's a nice tune and I think it would fit well with your site. Not too tricky, either.

Hi Adrian, i guess as soon as we see C and D back and forth we think key of G but .. not correct. So key of D but mixolydian which is just lowered 7th?

Hi Scott. Not at all incorrect to think G major since G major is the same notes and same chords as D mixolydian. For me it's about the tonal centre, what feels like 'home'. And here D feels like home rather than G, which doesn't feature until the bridge. I like to think it's D major with a flat 7 rather than talk about the 'key of D mixolydian'. Sure other would disagree, but theory is always a bit subjective.

Thanks Jeff! Don't know the track you mention but I'll certainly take a listen.

Hi Adrian, Really love the sound of your Martin. Is it all Mahogany? Thanks for the lesson. Great editing. It must have taken alot of time. Did you upgrade your cameras a couple of weeks ago? Again, great work thanks.

Hi Sean. Yes, the Martin is a 0015M, all mahogany. Lovely guitar, not exactly cheap but at the more affordable end of the Martin range. I've not upgraded cameras for a while, but I did recently buy a couple of extra lights and change some of my usual settings, which might account for the difference in the way more recent videos look. I'm actually hoping to get a second camera fairly soon, which will allow me to switch a bit more freely between close ups and wide shots and get a bit more visual interest happening.

What type of melodica did you use?

anyonecanplayguitar

It's a Hohner. I've got another cheaper one that you play using a plastic tube, but it the tuning seems to have drifted way off.
