Hello Patrons!

This week, I'm looking at a track by LA punk band X. X are one of those bands I've known about for along time, but I'd never properly explored their music until quite recently. Now I'm a true believer - great songs, great lyrics, and stunning guitar work from Billy Zoom. Here's the link to the lesson: https://youtu.be/vQId7OfcyfU

And here's a nice live in the studio clip of the band performing the track (you can also see Ray Manzarek of The Doors producing): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emY12SGdrIM

This track is fairly easy to play I think, but as I say in the video, I'm definitely open to looking at some more elaborate X songs in future videos.

Tab is below. Backing track is coming up in the next post. Happy playing. Speak next week,

Adrian

Adrian, Love this, and truly enjoy all of your offerings that I have dove into so far! I just saw X on their final tour about a month ago, and it was a great show! I already had learned their songs, "Los Angeles" and "Nausea", so was pleased to see you had a lesson up for WG. Easy to pickup quickly, and so nice to have a great backing track to pump through the PA and play against. Cheers to the fine work!

Lori Jones

Billy was very impressed you nailed this.

Doug

Thank you. One of my all time favorites

New to this band, but absolutely love it. Its another track to add to the ever growing 'ACPG songs to learn' list. As someone who feels that they are at the upper end of beginner/lower end of intermediate I'm finding it a struggle arrange my daily practice (1hr) in an organised way. Every new song that's posted I want to try and play but never seen to perfect them before getting distracted by the latest one. I re-visit your "How to practice" videos thinking that will help but see but see the links to the scales videos and worry I should work on them, then it pops up with your videos on triads etc etc and I feel like I should be working on them and just stress myself out. I love you and hate you in equal measures!! 😂😂

anyonecanplayguitar

Haha yes, I completely understand. So easy to get distracted and sidetracked, and I realise I'm part of the problem here! I suppose you just have to prioritise and work out what the most important things to be working on are. It's obviously not possible to be learning every song that comes along, so maybe just pick your absolute favourites to learn properly, and just skim though the others for ideas. I also recommend having 2/3 of your practice time doing the 'work' and the rest for just having fun and just playing around.

Steve Holderness

Brilliant, thanks for the advice. I'll try and get myself more organised. I'll try to get the ratio of work/fun right and try not to fret (excuse the pun) about not knowing EVERYTHING and accepting that I need to walk before I can run. Thanks again, I am going to have a cheeky try at this song over the weekend as I'm not too bad on barre chords! 😂

Ralph Blair

Yet again you are reading my mind. Out for a run the week you posted the latest Cliff Gallup, up pops 'The Have Nots' on my iTunes, I thought "Adrian would probably like this", if you haven't gotten that far in their discography check it out.

Simon Morrison

Loving all the 80's punk Adrian! Johnny Hit and Run Paulene next please if you do more X. Any plans to do a lesson on something by the Replacements?

Eric Larsen

Thank you, Adrian! X is on the short list of my all-time favorite bands. Grateful for this one and would love if you would do more.

Awesome X Lesson = New Patreon Member. Thanks for this! I really dig the types of things you do on this channel. Definitely looking forward to the possibility of more X lessons and lots of other great content! Have a great weekend!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Scott, lots of great info there. Yes, it made my day that BZ himself was impressed. He even sent me a personal email - what a nice guy, as well as a punk guitar legend!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, will almost certainly do more X. Your suggestions have been noted! Unlike X which are quite a new discovery for me, I've loved the Replacements for a long time, so should certainly look at one of their songs soon. Any favourites?

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Eric. Yes, fantastic band - don't why I came to them so late. Will almost certainly be doing some more soon.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks CC! Good to have you on board here. Glad you liked this one. Will almost certainly be looking at some more X later this year.

Ralph Blair

No pressure but, having watched you play, I'm pretty confident you could handle it!

Ralph Blair

This is a problem I have as well, a neurotic obsession with ticking boxes extending to something I'm doing to get away from ticking boxes in my work life. One thing I've been doing is working on songs that illustrate something I'm trying to get better at; e.g Adrian has a lesson on a Siouxsie song called Spellbound that's great for working on cross picking, or I play the beginning of American Girl to work on strumming speed (the D octave Mike Campbell plays in the intro). Good luck!

CC

Thanks again Adrian. Hey, one other request. Much like X's Billy Zoom, the Reverend Horton Heat's Jim Heath doesn't really see lessons posted on YouTube or elsewhere. I love the band's music and would really enjoy it if you would consider posting a lesson on one of their songs if you are moved by the music as I am. Songs for possible consideration: The Devil's Chasing Me, Revival, Psychobilly Freakout would be some good ones, or anything from the band really would be great!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, I've really liked some of the Rev Horton Heat tracks I've heard. I must get into them more deeply. Will check out the tracks you mention - thanks!

Paul Wiesike

Hey Adrian - I was not familiar with this band but I really dug this track and it's a lot of fun to play. I'm a new Patreon member as of this month but your website and lessons have definitely had a big impact on my guitar playing over the year so thanks! Also - one quick request but I would love to see a Yo La Tengo lesson at some point (maybe Detouring America with Horns but anything really - love them).

Chris Kueny

I just today saw the kudos from Billy Zoom. Very cool! (Not the first time this has happened either--Adrian also got an approving comment from Television's Richard Lloyd, for his Venus lesson if I'm remembering correctly.)

Chris Kueny

Oh yeah, YLT seem right up Adrian's alley! (Of course, Adrian's alley is pretty big I guess.)

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi Paul. Welcome on board here, thanks for the support. Yes, love YLT. I must revisit some of their albums as I've not listened to them for a while. I'll see what I can do with a video - I think plenty of people on here would enjoy it.

Ed

X - awesome! Been a fan since I saw them live in the early 80's. Love annoying die-hard Doors fans with X's version of "Soul Kitchen" especially given who produced that album...

Clay Wiedemann

I decided to go back to this track and learn it -- I noticed you got props from Billy Zoom himself on the lesson for this! Amazing. Seems like a good time to request more X, too :)

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, BZ actually sent me a really nice email saying he enjoyed the video and my playing. Amazing, and always a nice ego boost when that kind of thing happens! I might well look at another X track at some point. Anything in particular you'd like to see me do?
