Hello all,

This week, more X. As I say in the video, I don't usually like to repeat myself by looking at the same artist in consecutive videos, but I couldn't resist taking a look at this track. It contains a superb country-influenced guitar solo. And I also discuss how you can use triads and chord tones to solo over a slightly awkward chord progression. Here's the link -

My tab is attached below. I've written out the whole track up until the end of the guitar solo. After that, it mostly just repeats.

Enjoy learning the track. Something completely different next week!

This is great, thanks. Forgotten how much I liked this song. Song suggestion from the same era: The Feelies "The High Road" has a sweet solo part.

Ralph Blair

Thank you Adrian!! I knew you’d nail it! If you’re into the country side check out the X off shoot the knitters. Bakersfield meets punk.Dave Alvin on guitar. Great versions of Burning House of Love, Dry River, etc. thanks again!

Yes, like The Feelies, but not listened to them for a long time. I'll take a listen to the High Road, not sure if I've heard it before or not. Thanks!

Thanks Ralph. Really enjoyed learning this one - I was planning on doing something else this week but just found myself getting into this song, so decided to just go with it. Will have to investigate Shoot the Knitters - thanks or the tip!

Chris Grimes

This solo is incredible! I'll have to block out the rest of the year to work on this.

Chris Kueny

Well, it's fortunate for me that I've not been an X listener so far and that the solo is challenging enough for me to not attempt now, so I won't get distracted yet again from some of your previous lessons. I hope I might succeed this year in getting "Christmas Time is Here" into a presentable form for Christmas. (I was never that much into the TV specials although my wife loves them, but that is my favorite Xmas album.) Such a rich collection of things you've given us. You and Justin are the only two teachers that I really like to spend a lot of time with, and I've actually settled into mostly just your videos since you cover so many dimensions that it ends up being a pretty comprehensive survey of guitar technique.

Richard Adams

amazing choice! X has been one of my favorite bands for the past 35 years at least. love seeing the appreciation they're finally getting outside of Los Angeles. thanks so much for this lesson, I wouldn't have a prayer of getting this stuff if you didn't break it down so well

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Chris. Yes, I love Justin. He's been doing it longer than any other online guitar teacher I think, and has a massive and comprehensive collection of lessons that I can't really compete with. But it's good to hear you're getting most of what you need from my videos. At some point I'd love to do some proper courses where it would allow me to go into certain styles or technique in a lot of detail. But it's a question of finding the time to do it properly!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, such a great solo. Might be a bit of a project to learn it properly, but worth it I think!

Glad you liked it Richard. Yes, I have a feeling X are more appreciated in the US than here in the UK, where they seem to be relatively unknown. But it's been a pleasure for me to explore some of their music and to attempt to play some of it.

Keith Graham

Seen X a few times. Love billy zooms playing. And yours is pretty good too. This is why I subscribe to your patreon. Really great stuff.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Keith! I'd love to see X and Billy Zoom live - really hope that will happen, once live music becomes a reality again.

W. Kent Isgrig

Really nice, thanks so much. Billy Zoom is a fantastic guitarist and musician. Perhaps you might consider a "Devil Doll" lesson some day?!

anyonecanplayguitar

Thank-you! Yes, I'd like to do more X next year, will add Devil Doll to my list of possible songs to look at.

Burke Burnett

I second the vote for Devil Doll. (Though I've already worked it out.) It's a great song.

John Walsh

Thanks so very much for this one ! Perhaps the solo from 'Breathless' one day when you have time?

anyonecanplayguitar

My pleasure John. Yes, might try Breathless at some point, be good to do a bit more X
