Hello all,

This week, a simple yet powerful concept aimed at developing your soloing and improvising abilities. We're going to be playing over a blues in E, but you're only allowed to use the B string. These kind of restrictive exercises can be excellent ways to get away from always playing the same old thing. Here's a link to the video:

Give it a try. I'd be interested to hear what you make of it, and if you find the exercise helpful.

I've written out the solo I play at the start of the video - find it attached below. The backing track is coming up in the next post.

Have fun with it. Speak next week,

Adrian

Most of my solos don't go beyond 2 strings because that's about all my mind can concentrate on. 😄

Haha. For the kind of music you and I enjoy, one or two strings is often all you need to create a great solo! Someone reminded me the I'm Set Free solo is all on one string, and it doesn't get better than that.

Thomas Simmons

Yes, the most important quality a solo needs is to be memorable. I love electric guitar so much, whether its the likes of Eddie Van Halen or Joey Santiago, electric guitar is always a pleasurable experience to me.

Thanks Kevin - yes, give it a try. I've found it to be really beneficial in my own playing.

It's a really good and usefull contstraint. I have a Bill Frisell dvd in which he encourage to do the same kind of exercise. He even goes further and propose to do it with only one finger !

One string and one finger wow! Will have to try that. Makes sense, as I seem to recall that Frisell studied with Mick Goodrick at some point, though I might be wrong on that.

Check on youtube "the guitar artistry of Bill Frisell" at around 8 minutes. He says he did that to break the patterns that can limit yourself... very interesting

Thanks Stephane. This is amazing, didn't know it was on YouTube! Going to be watching all of it this week.
