Evening Patrons! Here's this week's video. (A little later than usual - thanks to a mega time-consuming edit - but I got there in the end!)

I'm looking at the classic Replacements track I Will Dare. I know quite a few of you on here have requested I look at some Replacements, so hope you enjoy this one. A great song, tons of nice riffs and licks. Link here:

I've tabbed it out below as best I could. There were a couple of spots where it was impossible to really hear what was going on, so there's a bit of guesswork on my part in places. The Stinson parts have the high E dropped to a D. (I can't seem to get Guitar Pro to change tuning in the middle of a page, so the tab is correct but standard notation wrong in a couple of places. Sorry!)

Backing track coming up in the next post. Speak soon,

Adrian

Thomas Simmons

I've listened to this album so many times. Never thought to learn how to play any of the songs for some reason. Still my favorite album of theirs. Something about the way it sounds. It's raw, but still nicely recorded like you feel you are in the room them.

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, you're right the recording is great. In places it sounds quite polished but overall there's still a pleasing messiness.

Thomas Simmons

I like that description...a pleasing messiness.

Ralph Blair

3 guitars at once! Amazing. Man that chorus melody sounds like I'm Only Sleeping. For some reason the arpeggios on the seventh chords in the Buck solo also reminds me of Verlaine. Thanks!

Chris Grimes

I brought this to my guitar teacher in high school circa 1986 & he just gave me a dead stare. He was a funny, nice guy & a great player but he absolutely hated REM, The Replacements, Pylon etc. So it's great to finally get a lesson on this one!

Chris Grimes

(I always assumed Pete Buck played the mandolin on this....)

Stéphane Mineot

Great again. And I have to confess that I didn't know That band so much. by the way, what is this electric 12 strings guitar standing behind ? Thanks

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, absolutely right very similar melody to I'm Only Sleeping. Such a Lennon technique to keep repeating the same few notes over different chords. And I can hear what you mean with the Verlaine influence - I'm sure Buck was a fan.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Gus - this looks fascinating. I'll take a listen this week. Great list of previous episodes too!

anyonecanplayguitar

Yes, that's what I though too. I might have got it wrong - but apparently it's credited to Westerberg. Can't currently locate my copy of the album to check.

anyonecanplayguitar

Thanks Stéphane! If you don't know the Replacements it's well worth checking out the Let It Be record and the next 2 albums. Yes, picked up a 12 string late last year. I'm going to be telling you all about it in an upcoming video.

Stéphane Mineot

I'm already on the Let it be record. Sounds great !

Chris Kueny

Wow, that podcast looks great. I'm downloading a few episodes right now.

Steve

This is great, thank you! Been listening to more Replacements since the lockdowns began last year, though I’m not sure why.

anyonecanplayguitar

Cheers Steve. Yes, been listening to them quite a bit myself. If you can't actually get out to a noisy, chaotic live show this is probably the next best thing.

David Lopez

Can’t wait to learn this one. I have a feeling you have another replacements song up your sleeve for the future...something we might not expect, perhaps??? 👽

anyonecanplayguitar

Hi David - yes, I've already started figuring out a couple of other Replacements tracks. So hope there'll be more videos coming a bit later in the year.

Chris Kueny

Gus, I've listened to a couple of episodes. I usually dislike busy shows with people jabbering away and laughing, etc. I just can't take the input. But this show is an exception. I've never heard more thoughtful, informed and tasteful music commentary. I've listened to a couple of episodes on albums that I know well, but now I'm really looking forward to these guys leading me through a lot of stuff that I don't know well. Thanks for the recommendation!
