Hello patrons! Hope everyone is doing okay. I thought it was about time we had another Nice Lick video. So today I'm looking at a bluesy, jazzy sort of lick that works particularly well over a dominant V chord in a minor key. Here's a link to the video -

Tab is below: I've written out the complete solo I play at the start of the video, the actual lick is in the last couple of bars.

As you can hear in the video my Fender Deluxe is now fixed. Thankfully, I just needed to change the fuse. (Thanks to a couple of people on here who suggested that might be the problem, and saved me having to take it somewhere for a repair.)

Hope you enjoy learning the lick.

Speak next week,

Adrian

Tasty! Reminds me somehow of Gypsy Jazz... More of this, please!

David Blanche

Please keep this series going. I look forward to it and it takes me out of my comfort zone! This one is smooth ;0/)

Like Dirk said the beginning especially very Django like! On YouTube one commenter mentioned a band Suede. This is definitely off topic, but speaking of fabrics, I recently stumbled on to a band called Felt, had never heard of them, but liked some of the songs and guitar work. What do you think of them?

Chris Maddox

Yes, a very nice lick indeed. Please keep this series going Adrian. You need only share a Nice Lick when the inspiration to do so strikes after all.

Love this one and SO glad you're continuing with the "Nice Lick" series. I spent some time this weekend working on it and it's coming along nicely. What I appreciate so much is the time you take to share the theory knowledge. I can't overstate how deeply that reinforces it for me, thank you so much!

Thanks Boomer! Glad to hear you've been getting on well with this one. Quite a lot of people seem to be enjoying this series so I'll definitely be continuing with it.

Thanks Chris! There's been a surprising amount of love for this series, so I'm certainly going to keep it going now.

Thanks Dirk. Yes, I didn't think about it like that but you're right, gypsy jazzers do like that 7b9 sound.

Yes, Felt are another great band named after a fabric. I knew next to nothing about them until quite recently, but last year I got into a couple of their albums. Very elaborate and interesting guitar work. I may well attempt looking at one of their songs at some point.

Thanks David. Yes, there seems to be quite a lot of love out there for the Nice Lick series so it will continue!

What makes a difference and really adds so much to your lessons is the way you make sure we can understand the context, the theory, behind how each song, riff, or lick works. Somehow you manage to balance it such that it's very clear how it all fits together -- e.g., chord function, intervals, dom/sub-dom, and so on -- without it taking away from the great sounds and feels of what you're playing. Everyone learns their own way, I absolutely get that, but it just so happens that what clicks best with me is that middle-ground approach that you bring.

Thanks - I've always thought that context is important whenever you're learning anything. I do try and get the balance right by including bit of theory and background but not so much it puts people off or needlessly complicates things.
